So at work we got an exchange server... shits awesome. I love learning new things, and the back end of it is really cool too.

I recommend 'exchanging' it for something else.  Bleck... overpriced microcrap.

OK well we currently use verizon, which seems to be down every other day for a little while.

If you can find a solution that allows us to do the following, I'll present it to my coworkers:

1. Synch blackberries effectively and efficiently to their e-mail
2. Allow task and calendar sharing for departmental efficiency and organization
3. Well managed and organized online e-mail access
4. Effective backup of all users (200+) e-mail

and the list goes on... exchange is the only answer.

What would you suggest if not exchange?

You've painted yourself into a corner.  My guess is that everything in your business is based upon Microsoft products, thus you have no real alternative than to stay with Microsoft products.

basically this is the case yeah. See the problem with my company is until recently, they've never had a strong focus on IT. Past Network Admins were not very good at what they did, but they knew enough to get the job done.

As a result, our infrastructure is not up to par, wiring is shitty, etc. etc. We have problems with cross chatter and things aren't working the right way due to the growth of our network. Finally we were able to bring someone in who knows his shit and is turning things around. We purchased better, smarter switches, were going in and rewiring.... everything. Everything in the past was just so disorganized that we're kind of stuck, and it's only as we fix things and upgrade things that we get a chance to change things. We can't just bring down the whole network to change the IP schematics for each of our sites to make it more efficient, ya know what I mean?

Exchange is the best for what we have/need.
