Bolete ID please
    #9310069 - 11/25/08 11:00 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

So I found this today:

Brown cap, on which ive found a low amount of slime
Yellow pores
Stem is kinda off-white and is +-1cm thick and 10-12 cm long.

Found in a forest in Holland, near the german border. The trees in the forest are mostly pines, birches and oaks. This particular mushroom was found under a young pine.

The scent is eh... exactly like the smell of those white supermarket mushrooms.

I think: Suillus Granulatus, I haven't got much experience. It's just some sort of guess. I hope I IDed it well

It's not Suillus granulatus because that species has glandular dots on the stem.

Yous lacks the dots and therefore might be in Boletus or Suillus.  Is the cap really slimy or just a little slimy?  Olive spore print?

Looks similar to B. edulis but lacks reticulation on the stem.

Its probably good to eat.

Ah yes, so my guess was wrong. I haven't got much experince on IDing them at all as im almost entirely new to boletes.

I'm after a sporeprint now. Where those pores are theres some grey/greenish (ah, olive?) colored dots, from the spores I guess.
[EDIT: I just pushed the pores a little with my finger... the area where I pushed turned to that color as described above very fast.. so that'll be bruising then.]

As for the cap, it's just a little slimy.

And isn't the stem also way too thin to be an edulis? The stem on an edulis is fare more bowl-like or at least thicker, as far as I know.

B. edulis usually has a thick stem, but not always.  It is always reticulate though.

Look through the Boletus and Suillus that grow in your area under pines, you will find it.

I haven't found all that many boletes yet.
And I just discovered that the color thing on the spores is because of bruising.

Thanks for the help so far

That's a tough one. I am trying to ID it, but haven't been able to yet. Some characteristics are similar to Boletus subtomentosus (pores are very similar, though subtomentosus are usually a brighter yellow, proportions) and some are more like Suillus granulatus.
I agree that in all likelihood it's edible if cooked or fried well and probably tasty, too.

So that idea was not entirely ridiculous (far from that?).

Ok, a note on the bruising on the downside of the cap. After pressing it becomes green(+a bit of grey)-ish but after a while that seems to fade. Perhaps that might help

I'm not seeing a sporeprint yet.

No, that wasn't ridiculous at all. You say of yourself that you are a beginner and have just started this hobby. Quite a good job in narrowing this one down so far. I think you'll be very good at this in no time.
