Tomatoes under a 400 HPS **GROWLOG**

I never see anything like this and Ive been wanting to do it for awhile now.
So Im going to start a growlog. Ive never grown anything green before in my life. Not weed, not veggies, nothing .... with the exception of maybe a houseplant by squirting some miracle grow in a gallon of water and watered some plants. Also, I guess Ive repotted a house plant or two ... but other then that all my cultivation experience has been with fungus, with which Ive done well.
So, without further ado ... heres where Im at.
******************************************************************
I took six styrofoam cups (8 oz) and took a screwdriver and punched several holes in the bottom of each cup for drainage.
Then, since I didnt have any potting soil or decent soil on hand, and I was anxious, I hydrated some coir and mixed it with some verm and worm castings. I then put on seed on the coir surface in each cup and gently pushed a bit of coir over the top of the seeds.
I then took a spray bottle and sprayed down the surface heavily until water ran out the bottom.
3 Bush Early Girl Hybrid Tomato (slicer) seeds and 3 Totem hybrid tomato seeds (golfball sized fruits). The totel hybrid gets between 18"-30" at maturity and Im not sure on the bush early girl, but she is a deterimate type that is recommended for containers.
Both species are a determinante species, and I believe the packet says somewhere in the neighborhood of 58 days. I dont know what that means, but its 58 days for something. Im guessing until maturity and fruiting??
Anyway, I then put ziplock bags over the tops of the cups and waited. They all sprouted! Sweet .. in fact .. I ended up getting two sprouts in one cup .. seven tomato plants. I planted six because I only really wanted four total. 2 of each ... and I didnt think they would all germinate.
Heres some pics. I put them underneath a 42w CFL next to some basil I brought in from outside.
......... and here is where Ill be growing them. Im going to be using a spare shower that we dont use. I figure I can hang my 400 watt HPS in the shower and raise/lower it as the plants grow. I also have some green pepper and some hot pepper seeds coming, as well as some strawberry seeds germinating right now.
That might be a bit ambitious ... but Im going for it. Keep in mind I have no idea what Im doing, so hopefully you guys can guide me along the way.
Once the tomato plants are ready for transplanting .. I had planned on transplanting them in 3 gallon square pots and give them a worthy soil mix at that time. I think those would be big enough but maybe I should go to 5 gallon pots. I know theres no way I can fit all those plants in the shower... lol .. but Ild like to fit as many as possible as this is the space I have to work with for now.
Thats all for now, Ill keep everyone updated. Any suggestions or comments are more then welcome.
Oh .. I do have one question.. how long do I need to keep the ziplocks on the seedlings until they are strong enough to not need them??

For once, legal use of a 400 HPS! Lol.
Check into the cannabisculture.com grow forums, they might have some advice. Good job and very creative!

Will do and thanks for the forum tip .. been looking for a forum other then ICMAG. Well heres how they are looking so far.
Keep in mind, these guys are in coir, with verm and just a little worm castings.
Im noticing their leaves are curling down ... I remember reading that in MJ this can point to a deficiency of some kind? Magnesium??
However, Im only watering (twice per day) with plain water by saturating the surface with a spray bottle and Im not using a dome anymore at all .. so maybe thats the culprit?
How long before I should start adding ferts?? I was under the impression I could burn them when they are young. When I transplant I will transplant them into a potting soil mix, Im not planning on going soiless throughout the whole grow, I just started the seeds in this coir/verm/castings mix as its all I had at the time.
Any suggestions??

We just killed off 24 tomato plants we had been growing hydroponically under 400W HPSs for a month and a half at uni.
We were studying the different effects of nutritional deficiency on foliar area, leaf protein content, chlorophyll content and flowering.
It was pretty interesting actually. We got fruits and all in that time.
GL with you grow and keep us posted.
What variety are you growing?

Sorry guys ... no one was responding so I kind of ignored this thread.
I will get new pics up tonight they are looking good and I think ready to be transplanted and put under the HID.
For the record ... I DONT PAY FOR ELECTRICITY. So it doesnt cost me anything, other then the equipment, pots, soil, nutes, etc.
I have three totem hybrids (determinate, 18-30", up to 10lbs per plant golf ball sized fruits) and three bush early girl hybrids (determinate, 4" slicers) going right now.
I just got my green pepper seeds in and my hot pepper seeds in so Ill be starting them soon as well.
Ill get pics up tonight, thanks for the responses!

I've always wanted to do this too, either with tomatoes or strawberry's. I'd really like to see how this goes.

Do you really have to type out that user name every time you log on?
What were you thinking?

**********TRANSPLANTED****************
Im getting excited now! lol ...
So heres what I did. Hopefully I didnt add to much ferts to the soil mix, maybe you guys can tell me what you think .... if I made it to hot or not.
I used this potting soil, it seems to have a lot of verm and perilite in it.
I added 1/4 cup of this to the mix (as per directions)
.... then added just a pinch of gypsum (probably 1/8th cup per pot), as well as a handful or two of this cow manure plus compost.
Mixed it all up ....
Then I made sure they all fit in the shower
The totem hybrids are in 3.7 gallon containers and the bush early girl hybrids are in 5 gallon pots
Then transplanted them, mounted the 400 watt HPS and fired it up!
--- You guys think I should mount the doors back on the shower or leave them off??

Wow. I am jealous. I need to get into indoor growing. If that is always going to be a "spare" tub then you might want to look into turning it into a hydroponics set up. That would be tits.

I thought about it, but I keep hearing that tomatoes taste better in soil then hydro ... Ill probably give hydro a shot at some point in time though, just for the experience of it.
