Monotub size???
    #9298442 - 11/23/08 04:28 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Hi folks, I need some help. Im doing my first bulk grow. Im using Orissa India ms syringe.  I have 10 lbs of pastureized hpoo/wheat straw and a 3 lbs bag of rye berries that is almost 100% colonized.  I will be using monstermitches casing tek as well when the time comes. What size sterilite storage container would be the best to put 13 lbs of material in?  18 gallon seems too small and a 36 gallon seems to big.  I know that the depth of the substrate will make a difference in the size of the fruits.  I really want the best size fruits as possible just because Im a perfectionist like that. Please dont just say "look it up" because I have and there is no exact info on this. I have seem Mojos calculator and that uses quarts measurements. I think I read somewhere that you want to have 4 inches of substrate. What size container will make 13 lbs of substrate plus a casing layer 4 inches thick? Thank you in advance.

I'm in the same boat as you ,working on my first bulk grow.

Here's what I've come up with.

18 gallon Rubbermaid Tough-tote - $7.00 at Lowes.
11x14 acrylic panel to modify the lid to allow light in- $3.50

The Internal dimensions of the 18 gallon rubbermaid is 12"x18"
Don't rely on the listed dimensions those are the EXTERNAL dimensions which include the lips, edges and carrying handles.

According to the Substrate calculator it'll take 3.75 quarts of material for each inch.  I'm aiming for about 5 inches of substrate + 1 inch of casing layer.  so I'll need around 20 quarts of substrate to fill mine to about where I want it.

I have no idea what the weight of horse poo converts to volume but you can probably eyeball it.

You need to factor in the depth of your substrate + growing room for your shroomies.

The 18 gallon tub is 17 inches tall so that leaves about a foot for my babies to grow.

Here's a pic of my prototypes ->

The black ones are some generic hard-plastic brand and I'd recommend against them, they like to crack.  The rubbermaid doesnt crack since it's rubber, not hard plastic.

The small tubs are my mini-monos.  I'm a bit concerned that the mushies will be squished a bit, but we'll see.

Really?  Pretty sure Rubbermaid uses polyethylene or polypropylene and not actual rubber...

I really have no idea what either is really made of.  However, the rubbermaid tubs bend/flex where the hard plastic doesn't.

Even being really careful during drilling out the holes a few of them cracked on the plastic tubs.  It was also very easy to cut the section of the lid out using a box cutter - but pretty tough on the plastic ones.  Plus if you were to put any real weight in the plastic one, then drop it, it would shatter/crack.

All things considered, not worth it to save $3.

I did buy a couple extra just to store horse poo/straw/compost in though since I have no need to drill or cut them up.

A plastic tub is a plastic tub... you're not supposed to throw them against a wall like a basketball.

So are you're saying to use less substrate and go with an 18 gallon?  Sorry the question mark is throwing me off.  What does that second sentence mean?  Sorry just a little confused.

I'm just offering my recommendation.  One is clearly more durable/sturdy then the other and the price difference is small.  I've got a dozen of those clear plastic tubs in my laundry room, storing blankets during the summer etc.

If I accidentally bump one off a table, with just a blanket it, they shatter like glass when they hit the floor.  I'd rather spend the $3 extra and not risk accidentally destroying 20 quarts of substrate that I spent weeks preparing.

I spoze I could make a quick video, put 10 lbs of weight into a rubbermaid tub and 10 lbs into a hard plastic, push both off a 3 foot table onto the floor and see what happens :-D

Not to be off subject, but Jack recommends transparent tubs instead of opaque because if you only have one panel on the top for light to get in, you can't stack them.

I would use a tub that had a gallon range of 20-30.

If they're transparent then you need a liner in the bottom of some sort.  Really, both ways work just fine just each has their pros/cons ups/downs.

My tubs are getting a drain & stopper so I can dunk & drain w/o removing the substrate from the tub. I've read alot of threads where people have tried to dunk larger substrates and end up fucking it all up so I want to avoid that and do it as simply as possible.  A liner would mess my whole system up.

I'll be stacking during colonization but once I'm ready to fruit they'll go on tables or shelves with extra lighting.

Also, you don't need to use one giant tub.. you can just use 2 medium sized tubs and even it out. It's also preferrable because if a tub gets contaminated it's ruined.  So even you have two tubs and one gets contaminated you still have the other one.

I like to have a liner anyways so stagnant water does not pool around the substrate and breed contaminants all over it.
