Berg, always keep the stems next to the corresponding cap. Otherwise, when half of the spore prints are black and half are brown (let's say), you'll know which of the stems belongs to which species.
You'll have to wait for the spore print.
*compliments of Gumby*
Also, don't store mushrooms in plastic bags, it may speed up the degradation of the mushroom, and lead to rot. Always use paper bags.

Yes, I think so too.
The spore print looks like it will be black but that may not tell us they are Subbs. The caps look a little like P. fimicola to me. Then again, I have these on my mind due to my IDed find.

Those are Panaeolina foenisecii. There are no Panaeolus species that have brown gills at maturity.

If they were jet black, that would mean you have some species of Panaeolus, though not all are active.

Also, it looks to me from your photographs that the mushrooms you found have gills that hang below the rim of the cap. Subs shouldn't do that.

Oh, and thebergshroomers, you've got quite a few horse ranches around where you live. Try looking for them in the horse shit. From what I understand you'll want to wait till the weather warms up a bit though... Above 50F at night and they start fruiting, according to the faqs I've seen.

You definitely have some species of Panaeolus, though I'm not sure whether any are P. subbalteatus (=P. cinctulus). Some of the top prints look a bit brown but it is really hard to tell with the (poor) lighting.
Luckily, no species of Panaeolus are poisonous. Though eating large quantities of some might cause GI upset (or vomiting or diarhea).

As I suspected, those are Panaeolus fimicola. I can verify it with microscopy if he is interested. For one thing, it is their season.

It could be, but with macroscopic variation within a species and many very similar looking species, I would stop short and just call it Panaeolus sp..

you shouldn't dry them -in- something. I have doubts as to there edibility right now. You should have left them spread out on paper under or beside a fan at least.

when stored without moving air there's nowhere for that 90% water to go as fast so it takes longer for the mushrooms to dry and therefore provides more opportunities for rotting to occur.
Probably should have done your homework on that one.

just smell them first and get them out of that bag, I'm guessing they aren't entirely dry yet. When they're fully dry they should snap like crackers.
And I kind of doubt they're active anyway, it's not really sub season.

yeah i dont think they are subs but im thinkin they might be Panaeolus fimicola. which are a little bit active. k so i took em outta the bag, ur right, not quite dry. i laid em out on a sheet of paper and have a heat fan on them (like a small room heater thingy). that ok?

"Subs" = Psilocybe subaeruginosa
"Subbs" = Panaeolus subbalteatus (=P. cinctulus)
Two different mushrooms with similar common names.
Subbs are REALLY tiny mushrooms, and although it may not be ideal, they are still edible if dried in a bag within the past 2-3 days and haven't been piled on top of one another. I know from experience. That 90% water isn't much for these little mushrooms.

Well, it has been about 30 minutes now, so IF they are active, and IF you ate enough, you should start feeling the effects any time now.
I ate somewhere between 40-60 dried Panaeolus subbalteatus (confirmed ID) once and just barely felt the effects.

Yes, P. fimicola are active, although according to my references only slightly so. Are you saying at times they are moderately active? If so, is that personal experience or a reference?
