Humidifier lowering room's humidity?

I recently setup a 4-tier greenhouse and am currently working on trying to get the humidity/FAE adjusted but so far am having some troubles.
I have a Vicks cool mist humidifier which is sitting in the bottom, and currently on a timer, 30 min on, 30 min off (30 min is the minimum amount of time you can have it on/off for). Before I started running the humidifier the humidity in my room was approx. 50%, but since its been running for about 24hrs, the room humidity has gone down to 36%. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Before I put the humidifier on a timer I left it running for 24hrs straight and although the humidity in the greenhouse was about 80%, the humidity in my room once again had dropped. (Even though the greenhouse humidity here was what I wanted it to be, I would rather not have it running 24hrs a day and know its not necessary, I just need to get it sorted out I guess)
I am going to add some perlite to the bottom of the greenhouse today so well see what happens, but if anyone has any input I would appreciate it!

I was going to suggest trays of perlite too, but I don't know about your problem beyond that!

What kind of hygrometer are you using and is it calibrated?
What kind of cool mist do you have? You want the impeller type with a spinning disc. Sounds like you have the kind that blows air through a wet filter which wont humidify you greenhouse.
Running an impeller type humidifier for 24 hours would result in flooding.

I have the Taylor 1458 but am wondering also if maybe it is not functioning properly. I have a vicks (V420) cool mist humidifier but was under the impression that it was an impeller type...

I just done a search for the v420 and its an impellar type.
Digital hygrometer.
After reading some of RR's post he uses 2 coolmists, 1 on the bottom and 1 on the top.

sounds like you might have a faulty humidifier.
i disassemblied mine to make a custom humidifier out of a kitty litter bucket (5 gallon square bucket). and my humidifier impeller fan fits perfect in there as well as the filter. then i can fill it up a bit more than needed.

hey man, i just got one of those greenhouses off of ebay, i think its the same you got?
I have a few suggestions, first you really need to get it sealed off at the bottom, that way you can put a small vent at the bottom RH will be easier to stabilize. I am going to run a Vicks V5100 Ultrasonic(45.00)its seems to be the best $ and easiest to setup, i am going to use 3" I.D. hosing to and from my humidifiers, any impeller type coolmist will work, i have a small air pump for FAE
You really need some better timers, here are the ones i ordered, i got 3 on for ultrasonic, one for coolmist, one for air pump.they will do 14 on/offs a day, for only 26.99 ea, in 1 min. increments
heres the linkhttp://www.rvfgardensupply.com/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=734025
anyways, we just keep each other informed on what works and what doesn't ....

Hmm... when I put my hand infront of the vent that it blows air out of, my hand gets a bit moist so that leads me to believe its working. I just don't understand how the humidity of the whole room went down. Working on getting a timer with shorter time increments (or maybe trying to manually modify the timer I have) cause I watched the humidity while it was on, and it went up to 78% but then dropped back down to 46% during the half hour it was off for.

My room was consistently at 40-45 %RH. Last week it got really cold and dry - the dew point was in the single digits outside. Well my %RH steadily went down to 20 over a few days. Today it warmed up a bit, and I'm back up to almost 30.
When it gets cold outside, your %RH will ALWAYS drop. Cold air holds MUCH less moisture than warm air - and when that cold air heats back up in your house, the %RH plummets.
For example it was 20 deg @ 60 %RH. If you were to heat that air up to 70, it would have the same moisture content, but the %RH would be around 10.

Ohh, thanks! It has been finally getting colder outside. I figured it must have been the humidifier since the %RH dropped around the same time, but that makes sense.
