I don't really recommend eating Amanitas in the first place, but there are those who enjoy them.I've also heard of people not enjoying the experience.
I was just being overly cautious I guess.Have fun.

I completely agree, it's tough to tell somebody to eat a mushroom you wouldn't eat yourself. It's way too much [dangerous] guesswork to achieve undesireable effects, IMO. I look at it the same way I view alcohol, I used to drink like a fish when I was younger, but don't touch the stuff anymore and can't imagine why anybody really would. Yet, I'm sure there are people here who would vouch that alcohol makes them feel good.

there no chance of making a mistake when it comes to identifying a fly agaric, not unless an elf painted it red and then a bird shat droppings all over it trying to pass it off as some wildlife import,

Yeah, but the species are so similar. Whose to say in colder weather, the cap couldn't be a deeper red in a similar species or something. I am sure that it would be no fun to eat a mushroom you thought was muscaria only to find out it wasn't. mm, why chance it? Not worth the risk in my book.

Not with that red color and warts on the cap. I still wouldn't mess with them. Amanita flavoconia is probably the closest match. As far as I know, the edibility is not established.

James chappy, Congrats on your find, I know that feeling of finding the first active. I was driving down the highway at about 60 and spotted some fly agaric on the side of the road and pulled right over and picked them. After that it almost seemed like they were calling me and drawing me to them.

hmm tell me pal what book is that? end of the day if a person is stupid enough to go medlin without knowledge on fly agarics and is picking red look alike mushrooms then they should be locked up, you have to be streetwise in the field and not bum around besides you can buy them off the internet for a small price with the right dealer so leave picking the fresh harvest to the pros and not these one time bum holes

I already said what book it was. Mine. Personally, I wouldn't go foolin with the amanitas. I quit drinkin jack b/c it made me wanna beat the shit out of anybody within reach, that's not to say you couldn't drink it all night and have a good time. Like I said, to each, his own. I edited my post. And creek, those look more like Pantherinas, we'd need a look at the stipe to be sure.

I dont have any pics of the stipes. These pics are a few months old and the mushrooms have already been dried. Are pantherinas active, edible, poison?

...forgot to add var. velutipes
Now that I look at yours more, I am thinking var. formosa Michael Kuo says that var velutipes are mainly a western species. The yellow varieties are more easily misidentified. I find yellow ones more often, the reason for my point of view.
O, and the edibility of alot of these species is not documented. Personally, I don't want to find out.

that's what i've heard.
proper drying and curing will convert this to muscimol, but eating them raw or when they've been poorly cured is really damaging to your liver.

I've had my little Muscaria sitting under a fan, drying for the last 14 hours... I'd be sure to cook it before I go ahead and start chowing down. I went ahead and read a few trip reports from fly agaric users. I'm on the fence now. I've developed a "rule" for the drugs I take. I won't take anything that I crave, I won't take anything that has uncomfortable side effects that outweigh the high, and I won't take anything without being comfortable taking it. On the other hand, I do have a rule to try everything once... except heroin and meth...
I'll just have to store it and wait for a time where I am ready for it. I just don't feel like getting all twitchy, vomity, and sweaty. I'll try it when I'm REALLLLLLY bored and have nothing else to get high on.
LouisLouis, I understand your sentiment for alcohol. I myself drink, but rarely to the point where I pass out or have a hangover the next day. To me, any drug can be taken to excess, where it's no longer worth it for the hangover or for the nausea. (Yes, it even applies to weed, if you don't believe me, smoke a TON of it, until you're good and high. Then smoke a ton more.)
Again, thanks for the help IDing this guy.
