WTF, why do expensive clothes go bad first?
    #9301768 - 11/24/08 01:32 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I don't get this at all. I usually buy pants and long sleeve shirts from J Crew or Banana Republic because they actually carry the awkwardly long sizes I need. I have a few items from other places like American Eagle or Dockers pants.

The shit from J Crew and Banana Republic seems to fail faster. One pair of Banana Republic jeans had the pockets tear out of them, another pair had a zipper that decided it didn't want to stay up, A Banana Republic sweater developed a rip in the seam within 2 months of owning it, and now the button is coming off a pair of J Crew pants that fit just fine.

With other cheaper brand the only problem I've ever had is maybe a button coming off and I've owned way more pairs of other company pants than the expensive shit.

You'd think that when you're paying some ridiculous shit like $90-$110 for a pair of jeans that the quality of the stitch work and whatnot should be flawless. The only advantage I've seen is they fit better and have more durable fabric.

Anyone else notice the same shit? This really pisses me off.

They only expect their clothes to last as long as the trend.

Unfortunately expensive name-brand doesn't equal durable - it's more for just looks.  I had a $200 pair of sunglasses before, and I couldn't believe how flimsy they felt.  They looked really nice, but they literally felt cheaper than ones from those Sunglasses stands in the mall.

americans make cheap clothing so you keep buying it.  Really good quality clothes come from europe and are expensive but worth it unlike expensive american stuff. european people usually only have 2 or 3 pairs of clothes and wear em for hears. cause they are made well and to last

planned obsolescence man.
business is about making money, and making durable high-quality shit cuts profits.
that or you should find some better companies to buy clothing from.

I wouldn't go that far. I have a pair of Kentucky Hemp outfitter jeans from the US that have lasted a decade.

I've also got some smaller brand clothing that has lasted a long time.

Take Oakley(not a small brand, but US made), for example. I've yet to replace any sunglasses, desert boots, board shorts, or shirts from that place.

:werd:

All my nice clothes goes in the dumps quick. I keep resorting back to my "poverty" stash of crappy clothes I've had for like 6 years. Even though they make me look like a bum they do the job.

i just love the idea of passing along old belongings.    why throw away something you don't need when you could give it to someone else that may benefit from it

The problem with my ghetto stash is that they are way oversized. My old khakis are like a size 34 and I usually wear a 28. Used to be a 26, but I'm trying to gain.

My opinion is that poorer people value things that last over things that look good. So when a company is making something marketed towards people with a lower income they make something which works and which lasts, because thats what lower income people appreciate. While rich people mainly just care that it looks good and are prepared to buy a new one when it breaks.

But that being said lots of cheap products are actually shit. But you do find some good cheap things which will last three times longer than more expensive things. Its worth the risk in my opinion.

It depends. All of the clothes I have I either get cheap or buy from a thrift store, but jeans are something I have a hard time compromising on. I wear them at all times unless I'm not wearing pants, which is quite often (like now). Just before the new semester started, I invested in a $150 pair of jeans from Tommy Hilfiger (the only brand of jeans I like wearing). Ever since I put them on, I can't bring myself to wear any other pair, let alone brand. I've literally been wearing them since late August, about three months now. If they need washing, I throw them in the wash and walk around half naked, but at no point have I been able to wear something else and at no point have they started wearing on me. I'm gonna have this pair for years, and I don't regret a cent of it.

Do you guys have 'TK Max' ?

Man I love that place, I get all my trousers from there (I wear baggy walking trousers pretty much all the time.. They're so unbelievably comfortable that I just can't go back to jeans).

If I went to a hiking shop and bought them they'd be about £50.. in tk max they're normally ~£20

I'm European, and we have the same shit clothing you guys have. Let's face it, it's all made in the same sweatshops in China and Indonesia.
I have had cheap ass shirts that looked good for years and expensive clothes that almost fell apart after one wash.

I do own one woolen  coat that I've been wearing since 1992 that still looks good.

Go for natural fibers, and judge a piece of clothing by look and feel not by brand name. With a little practice you can learn to spot quality.

I'd rather spend $6 on a pair of cheap shoes at a dollar store
that'll last me 3mos than a pair of $150 nikes that'll last me
3 mos... quality is out there you've just got to look in the
less conventional places to find it

next time you're in atlanta, hit calhoun and dalton, see what those outlets have to offer
