30 Words
    #9299376 - 11/23/08 06:50 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

This is something I did in my freshman level sociology class.

Try to make a list of 30 words that you think describe who you are, that capture some aspect of your self, your personality, your existence.  They can be adjectives like 'intelligent', 'athletic', 'abrasive', or titles like 'doctor', 'golfer', 'meditator', etc.  They could also be other kinds of words, so long as you honestly feel they have some pertinence to your life.  Try to make them as specific as they can be.

The goal is to think deeply about the things you associate with your self.  Maybe you'll find some things which you have thought are part of your self, but which are actually just things which you have identified with strongly for a long time.  Maybe you won't be able to trivialize something as complex as your sense of self by listing 30 words which augment it.

So...Can you come up with 30 words?  What do you think of this activity?

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

30 might be too many words for me (how 'bout 12):

experienced, close to the edge, curious, scientific-constructive, creative-artistic, patient, fast&slow.

It would be more fun to describe another poster in 30 words, but I fear Mod V is watching.

That's a problem I'm having too.  I feel I run the gamut.  When I feel angry I am angry.  When I feel love I am that love.  When I wash dishes I am washing dishes.

Here's my shot at it:

Breath, Being, Awareness, Artist, Co-Creator, Seeker, Lover, Emotive, Wave-Rider, Writer, Reader, Basketball Player, Walker, Biker, Compassionate, Self-pitying, Arrogant, Ever-new, Ever-ancient, Sexual, Student, Cosmic Infant, Adolescent, Adult, Fear, Envy, Emptiness, Heart-mind, Neither-existence-nor-non-existence

Get to know me and you will see that a word or multitude thereof cannot begin to describe a person, what i'm trying to say is that this is hard.
