I was just going to log back in and send a PM to RR -- using my status as an unknown to elaborate how useful this post is and asking for it to be made sticky. Glad to see the wisdom of the board has once again beaten me to the punch!! (I'll never make 50 posts when all my questions are already asked and answered!)

I've been reading these boards for a month and learned a lot from everyone, but having this logical presentation -- especially the descriptions of the two methods -- really brings home.

And I'll second the notions that it be required reading. (Perhaps a link to it in the Welcome message when joining the forums??)

Thanks to all, but especially the Trusted Guys!!

I must say the hardest of all was avoiding using words and abbreviations that for me are second nature.

I started typing it up using BRF, FAE, mycelium, pins, etc and realized it would be really hard to understand for a complete newcomer, so I had to rewrite it avoiding as many technical terms as I could.

thanks Nibin for the posting and links. i had already downloaded/and/or printed some of the teks earlier when i first arrived. i tend to be nonlinear in my searches, but guidance from the pros is without a doubt the most beneficial way to go. i like simple.
my knowledge has already increased greatly since my first arrival and i continually refer people to this site and share what i have learned. thanks to everyone who has made this site what it is by creating it and by donation of teks, time, and other writings.

it is a nice growing community with very knowledgable teachers(LIKE NIBIN) willing to go extra miles to help someone who first tries to research this site themselfs. If you are new and reading this: to dodge verbal bullets and gain respect here, use\read\search this site to find your basic answers before asking a question that gets asked a million times a year. chances are a two second search of posts will give you the answers. i would have to say, this post has 99 percent of the answers anyone new could ever ask! -good luck and Nibin : :yourock:

is it possible to inoculate the spores directly into the substrate...lets say a mixture of steer manure and straw and letting it colonize and fruit, and skip the cake method?

It will work but success rate is very low unless you use bags and inject with liquid culture.

Here is how you should procede more or less

Yeah but with spores it's not going to work.

It has been known to but the failure rate is extremely high.

There are those manure bags with a grain pocket which work well with spores.

I watched a video a few minutes ago that explained how rye seed can be used to grow bulk amounts. how long after colonization can someone use rye seed substrate to inoculate more jars?
