spires of mycellium?
    #929015 - 10/03/02 06:14 PM (15 years, 19 days ago)

ok...
its been 33 days since innoculation
cakes have been in grow chamber for over a week
they seem to be getthing fluffier/whiter
nothing that resembles pins... but
there are these "spires" of mycellium that are comming out of some cakes
i wish i had a camera
they dont rememble anything i've seen online
kinda like little spikes comming up about a 1/4 inch ... less maybe
only from 2 cakes...
will these turn to pins?
is my humidity too high, temps wrong, anything i can do if these are not good to have?

sounds like your humidity is too high. also, those spires you are describing sound like pins, but it is hard to tell without pics.

ok,
now this is very odd to me, perhaps its normal to someone who knows...
those spires are still there, i don't know what they are, but i don't think they're
pins...
cuz i came home from work today and 2 of my cakes have pins comming
from the bottom of the cake.... not the sides towards the bottom...
the bottom where the verm layer was at
(the cakes were right side up for colonization, then birthed upside down)
they were kinda growing through the wire mesh, and i'm supprised i even saw them
one cake has like 10 the other 2 or 3
why from the bottom?
i flipped them over so the pins are faceing up... is this ok?
should i leave it how it was?
and what are these "spire" things that are still on the other cakes?
thx for replys...
i'm very excited about pins, so the spires are not bothering me as much :P

Well, if it was me, I would not have turned the cakes. The pins know which way is up before they are pins. The "spire" things you keep referencing to may just be rhizomorphic growth, which was explained to me as a way the mycelium tries to find more nutrients before pinning. It does not mean you do not have the proper nutrients in the cake. Its just going for survival of the race, and if it can branch out and reach more food, then its odds are better.
