Nibin said: Method 2 Grains and Bulk Growing
While spawn is normally colonized grain, you can actually also use broken up PF tek cakes, and if you have been patient enough to read all of this you have just discovered the way to grow in bulk without using a pressure cooker (as the pressure cooker is required to prepare the grains, not the bulk substrates)
This was such great info! I am looking at doing my first grow just trying to get it all planned out before starting. I am looking at using broken up PF tek cakes for "Method 2 Grains and Bulk Growing" Do i inject the spores into the 1/2 jars and wait for them the 10 days for them to fully colonize before i break the cakes up? Or would it be a better idea to break the cakes before injecting spores and then mixing the cakes and spores together? Do you have any ideas you would like to recommend.
To the fruits of our labor, the magical treats!
do this http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek for 24 cakes, inoculate with spores and let fully colonize
then in a new ziplock crumble (as fine as you can) all your cakes then use this bulk tek to mix with your crumbled cakes.
super easy as long as you can follow proper sterile tek to make sure you dont contam your project.
24-36 finely crumbled cakes will substitute for 5-6qts of grain spawn for any bulk tek though. thumbup:

So tomorrow will mark 4 weeks after inoculation in my first PF tek grow. I did 10 jars all of which show signs of growth and no contam. The jars vary in colonization from 10 to 60%. I'm wondering if this is just a bit slow and if it is how can i fix it. The temperature is about 65 degrees in my house which i know is cold but not much i can do about it.

then thats what there going to do, colonize slowly
if you could get the temp up just 7-8* it would make a world of difference.

Four weeks of healthy growth without reaching 100% likely may mean that either your substrate is a too wet or is too tightly packed.
Good luck,

You can put the jars on top of the fridge, it seems about ten degrees warmer up there. Also, you can use a couple of tubs with an aquarium heater.

so i moved the jars directly next to my radiator and one jar has already jumped to about 90% colonization and the rest aren't too far behind... so i just have to hope it isn't to late and that they'll still start pinning soon.

I had many, many questions when I discovered this site. After reading several teks and all 61 pages of this post, I have only one left...
Unfortunately, I started out just watching RR's videos on youtube and then found spore store through google, and didn't find this site until I went searching for tips on why nothing was happening.
Are spore store syringes just straight up water, or are there a few viable spores in there somewhere? I have 20 PF tek cakes and 2 rye jars sitting there doing nothing. They're all the result of 2 syringes and I have 2 left. Should I make a few cakes with low water content and inject an entire syringe into each, or just cut my losses and start over?

i'd say start over and purchas from a vendor here..
how long has it been since you inoculated? you can always keep them just incase they do decide to grow but i'd have some more ready to go just incase they dont..

My first purchase was before I came here, I was ripped off, the bottles were viable, and I had results, but I paid a lot for 5ml of solution.

I would stop with those syringes and buy from one of the reputable dealers who sponsor this site I have bought from Ralphster's and Hawk with mainly positive results. I would also autoclave the syringes you have for future use with converting prints over to spore solution and inoculating.

I guess the one good thing that's come of this is that it's essentially a dry run to test how sanitary my working conditions are... there's no myc growing, but there's no mold either. It's a small win, but I'll take what I can get at this point.
I think I'll inject the two remaining syringes into the rye jars I just made and see if anything comes of it. I can't start over until I get new spores anyway.

I just wanted to update from my last post, out of the 12 wheat berries aka."wheat kernel" jars that I PCed and "inoculated in a glove box" I lost a total of 3, which is not bad considering this is my first attempt at grain\mono tub TEK, I shook after 25%or30% of growth maybe a lil more as I didn't know what 20%to40% looked liked...lol...it took 3 weeks to reach 100% colonization, is that normal ? jars sat at a lil over room temp, I followed Damions 5050's coir tek on ma first tub 02-19 and the 2nd small tub 02-21. I'm guessing now the waiting game to see what kind of yields I will have.
A big "Thank You" to everyone who answered questions & helped me get to this point !

Three weeks for 100% colonization is not too long.
Good luck,

yes, you should spawn it to a substrate...then case if you want, but casings arent required for cubes.

I spawn to coir...
as well i use a 64 quart sterlite tub, with 2 2 inch holes about 4 inches from the bottom on the long sides, and 1 towards the top of the tub on the short sides.
