use this method for rye, http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Grain-Preparation
rinse clean soak for 24hrs (I add a tablespoon of gypsum per cup of rye during the soak) simmer for 15-20min (you just need to get it to almost a boil so its really hot and then when you strain it the grain will steam dry after a few tosses) strain and toss to steam dry load jars (with or without a pinch of gypsum) PC for 60-90min @ 15psi let cool inoculate

Pretty much. Its cut up filter disks. Some craft type felt stuff works too. Its essentially polyfill thats been ironed flat.
Just standard silicone too. RTV isn't necessary, but of course you can still use it.
If you are going to use tyvek instead, I would silicone a piece to the top and another one at the bottom, making sure that they dont touch. The purpose for this is to make sure they they both dont get wet and wick in contaminates from the out side.

Good call Base.
I remember when I first read Doc saying that he puts a piece of Tyvek onto the inside of the lid too.
I had to ask him to verify....as it seemed odd for some reason.

Does this look colonized enough to use as spawn? it's taken over a month to get to this point:

From as far as I can tell, that jar of birdseed is fully colonized. Open it up and give it a wiff. If it smells of sweet mushroom mycelium, spawn it.
Another good sign that your jar isn't contaminated is to break it up. If the grains separate from each other with ease, that's a symptom of healthy grain spawn as well.

let it colonize/cover about 30-40% of the grain and shake it up/roll it around to disperse the myc to the rest of the grains and in 3-4 days it should recover and finish colonizing.

awesome! thanks for the quick replies. i am so surprised, i have not had any problems since i started growing, other than too much spore solution in my first pf jars, its probably due to the fact that i am anal about cleanliness in my home.i will be starting my own thread on my first attempt at bulk.edibles are also sounding like a good idea.

um yeah i cant find a better place to post this, i took a bag of cow crap home laid it out in the shade and watered it daily and its been raining non stop. Im currently in tonga for december. I harvested one , the stem is 5-6 inches long and the cap is 2 inches. Im going to harvest the other one at the end of the day which is the same size, and have a baby one starting. I cut it in half and put it on paper in a drawers next to my window , the drawer is half open and under the the mushroom is black like liquid i guess. Want to make sure thats just water and not the active ingredient that makes you trip.i plan on tripping on Christmas by myself and just sit in my room and play xbox live etc.i dont need the mushrooms to be dry or any thing like that i just need to preserve them for like 5-7 days. I had tea-cocoa that we made with about a pound a week ago of mostly just starters we picked ,very abundant here. i plan on eating them i dont have a grinder or anything just here visiting but will chopping it up in oj work or i can just chew and swallow them cause the taste isn't that bad. I might half to go picking for more and just eat em fresh. 2 Weeks before i ate a handful and never felt anything. so i just need reassurance that this is ok and some pointers to help me trip harder. The tea trip i felt was mild and had two cups and only lasted for like 2-3 hours, and one intense hour. thanks sorry for the long post.
