So this is my first time at the PFTek method and it has worked out fine. Although I had a few bumps along the road. So I decided to try out 2 species (Treasure Coast & Penis Envy), 10 1/2 pint jars (5PE & 5TC). After reading through all these post I noticed a few mishaps. For starters, I covered the holes with tape during the incubation process not allowing for air exchange and placed them in a shoe box above the fridge which temperatures reached above 89 degrees. I'm sure inside the jars were above 95 degrees which I believe caused the Myc to grow EXTREMELY SLOW (Almost 3 months to be exact). I birth the cakes and dunk and roll them. The second issue was with my Shot Gun Terrarium, didn't drill holes on the bottom of the SGFC to allow good air flow. I don't know how severe these would affect the cakes but they have been in the FC for a week now and I got some Myc growth on the cakes

TC and PE are the same species (P.Cubensis) they are different substrains of Cubensis.
an example of diff species would be Azures - Oysters
- P.Cubensis - Pan cyan - Ps. Cyan - Portabellas. :sun:

but it sounds like you have corrected any issues you had. :super:

:goodluck:  with the rest.

so for the past week i have been studying how to grow p. cubensis and have learned a ton so far from using this website, however there are still a few questions that i have for the more experienced mushroom growers out there.
first let me begin by saying that i plan to grow my mushrooms in a rubber maid tupperware container in my house. the temperature remains around 70-75 degrees so obviously i'm looking to find a reliable heat source for the terrarium.

1) after reading the pf tek and watching some of the step-by-step videos online i noticed a difference in the style of fruiting chambers used. In the youtube video, a box with holes drilled in all sides, but on the shroomery's pf tek guide it says to keep the box almost air-tight to retain the moisture. which of these works better: holes or no holes?
2) are there any additional nutrients or minerals that i can add to the cakes to improve my yield?
3) i started reading about aborted mushrooms today, however the descriptions that i got from my online sources have all been somewhat vague. i know that if left to rot these mushrooms can endanger the rest of the flush. how can i tell when to pick a mushroom that is ready to be aborted?
4) on the regular p. cubensis mushrooms should i wait for the veil to tear or harvest them just before they tear?
5) for a heat source i was planning on using a reptile lamp that i can dim down by covering the face. I figure this way the mushrooms are provided with the extra heat they need and a source of dim light. what do you think?

70-75 temps are fine for colonizing and fruiting, no extra heat needed.
1) 1/4 holes every 2" on all six sides.  its called a shotgun FC. watch the pftek/fruiting chamber vids here  www.mushroomvideos.com
2) not to increase yield in numbers but in healthier, more dence, meatier mushies you can add 1 tsp gypsum  per 5 cups brf to the pftek.
3)  the head will turn black.
4)  either is fine just get them B4 they drop spores everywhere.
5) you need lighting in th

3a) aborts won't rot between flushes, ok to leave or pick, either way is fine.

try soaking for less time next soak to avoid your myc from yellow-ing.
mushies are 90% water so a fresh supply is always beneficial, absolutely needed, no but worth the effort. :sunny:

Hello, all.

I'm a complete newbie who has been researching this forum for various teks and methods for over a year now and just inoculated my first batch of cakes two days ago.

First, the steps I took. (Yes, I realize not all were to recommendation.):

1) Purchased medium grade verm, BRF, spores from SporeWorks, and 12 half pint regular mouth Ball jars (all that were around).

2) Mixed substrate according to PF teks and RR's videos.

3) Sterilized jars in a large pot on a built in tray about 3 inches from the water. 93 minutes total.

4) Let them cool in the pot for an hour, then removed and took foil drip layers off. Let air-cool in 69F room for 3 1/2 hours. (Saw RR's post on realistic cooling times in a thread)

5) Jars were cool to the touch and I could not detect any heat inside, so I inoculated under a glovebox (sprayed with lysol) with rubber gloves (cleaned with 91% alcohol) and flamed the needle before each jar.

6) Jars were placed in a shelf in my closet to incubate.

Now, I have a quick question.

1) I'm approaching day three of incubation and have yet to see any mycelium growth. While I feel that my sterilization techniques were adequate, I'm wondering if my jars aren't full enough. In spots of several of the jars the substrate is clumped together with medium sized gaps of air in between. I'm wondering if these isolated clumps are making it harder for the spores to germinate.

Is this the case, or am I just being impatient? I know that it can take a week or more to see growth, but I'm a worrier by nature.

Thanks for the help, and for the wonderful website.

i have had to wait for up to weeks before seeing growth. 3 days isnt long at all. You should see some after atleast a week i would guess.

Penis Envy [Re: TacoHerder]

So I have 5 cakes of Penis Envy and 5 cakes of Treasure Coast and after 3 weeks or so the TC has pinned and produced fruit while none of my PE has pinned. I saw on a thread that they take longer. They are both under the same conditions in the FC. Any thoughts?

It appears patience is just something I need to work on, as one jar just got its first hint of mycelium!

I'm so excited, haha! This is my first time!

Thanks for a wonderfully informing post and a great recap of the basics for the beginner. I'm just very recently coming into the world of mycology although I'm no stranger to horticulture. I'm in the process of the PF Tek, and have already had to re-formulate my jars and re-pressure cook them because I'm so wary of doing it wrong. I'm a fan of following the directions to a complete T and it can get frustrating going from one Tek to another and reading that certain ideas are now frowned upon after already doing them. (i.e. PC times and such) I started with 45 min, then re-pressure cooked them the next day for 60. Then dumped them out because I wasn't happy with the formulation. I believe I went a little lite on the BRF. So I re-made my jars yesterday, putting in more BRF then before, bringing it up to about half the content of the verm and threw them in the pressure cooker for 90 min. Maybe a but overkill, but it seems its better to be on the longer side then the shorter when it comes to the sterilization. Made my glove box yesterday and I'm making a clean-room out of my small bathroom today. Complete with ozone generator and hepa-filter air purifier. Sorry to babble and go off subject, I'm just so excited to get into this stuff.

Thank you all for you time and its a pleasure to meet you all!

Jonny

i innoc'd some spores into a petri dish of BRF cake, I'm going to wait for that to colonize and then try to spawn it to jars of Rye.  I've read a bit about spent cakes being used for this, but never a colonized petri of BRF.

Perfect! You want a fresh young culture, not an old one.
When your petri is done, take sterile slices and drop them into jars, just like you would do with agar.:thumbup:
