It is not a good option, you should use a grain with an exterior hull/husk on it. CH

Tyvek is water proof so I'm guessing it should work.

No, you will want verm for almost all myco projects. You can use composts but when it says Mushroom compost it normaly means that it has been used to grow mushrooms, so it is a spent substrate and no longer any use for a mycologist. CH

Hi, working on my first grow, cakes are in the fc now. I have one cake that I pulled aside during colonization because I thought it had contam, but after a few days when I forgot about it, I noticed that it didn't look like it had contam anymore. It had been getting much more light than my other cakes, and now that they're all in the FC, it's got 4 or 5 good shrooms growing on it, which had me excited for a while, but last night I noticed a bluish part of the cake, not really near the mushrooms. Can cakes bruise? The blue-ness looks like it's just under the outer layer of white mycelia, not on the surface, so I wasn't sure about the q-tip method for checking if it's contam. Should I just get it out of the FC, maybe put it in it's own, to make sure I don't contaminate any others? I thought cakes were pretty strong in terms of holding up against contam once they're fully colonized.
Any help/thoughts would be great! sorry for no pics, I'll see if I can get some up if that would help.
thanks for your help

Cakes can bruise easily from misting or drying, it is normal. The Q-tip test isn't very useful bruised myc can come off on the Q-tip giving a false positive so don't bother. If you are not sure that it is bruising then isolate it from the other cakes. If you can get a picture it would help. CH

I was always wondering about how effective this method is when I was taking swabs, cause the swabs fucking bruise blue, which would make me think that maybe it isnt as effective as I have been told in the past. Thanks for clearing that up CH.

Hi folks, i have a question about white fuzz. I know it could be the sign of a coming pinset. I have an SG FC, and to get the most of the humidifying potencial of the perlite, i have my PF cakes on a plastic grid. I fastened it about 3 inches ower the surface. I heard, that the perlite can reflect light, that can cause that some fruiting bodies start to grow downwards. If its so, my theory is that they could grow all around the cake. I have the most white fuzz on the bottom of the cakes. Can this mean that the most fruiting bodies will grow from there? Thats not what i really want. Should i maybe turn the cakes?

You dont want to disturb the cake once they are in the FC. Pins can appear anywhere, you just have to wait and see.

i'm working on getting a pic. one of the bigger shrooms has a crack/tear in the cap, with a slight amount of dark coloring around it. is this a sign of contam? I've separated the cake from the others while home for lunch for now, and will try to get pics up after work.
thanks, CH, for your help.
