I think you would have alot better results using brown rice flour, dont even bother with white rice

I think your chances of success will be low compared to just going out and betting brown rice and verm
Do you have verm

Awesome post. it has changed my mind on what i plan to use for my substrate on my first grow.

I asked the question about 1/2 pint jars vs what I think in the PF Tek pictures are smaller jars, meant to say 4oz, not 8oz. Are the PF Tek pictures of 4oz jars or 8oz (1/2 pint) jars? should I use 1/2 pint like everyone says, or 4oz like I think I see in the pics?
thanks

those pics might just be wide mouth jars. 1/4 pints will work just as well.

if your refering to RRs vids those are widemouth 1/2 pints (short and wide/fat jars)
1/4 pints work just as well, they are just smaller.

My jars are colonising fine so far, I think, but I have a couple minor issues. It appears the mycelium is starting to colonise my layer of dry vermiculite, which I always thought was not supposed to happen. Also, I can see small droplets of water between the mycelium and the edges of the jar. The moisture content of the jars is fine from what I can tell, in fact I was slightly worried it was a little low. Am I still doing okay?

From what I've read, I couldn't tell how important it is to put tape over the inoculating holes while sterilizing my substrate jars. I did it just to be safe, but I've also seen a couple people mention that you should leave the tape off after inoculating. Is that true? Should I just leave the inoculated jars' holes uncovered? Is this because it needs air? Or cover them to keep out contam?
thanks for helping me with my first grow!

You really don't need to tape the holes at all, you should have the lids covered with tinfoil while sterilizing and a dry verm layer is there to keep contams out after you inoculate. So I say skip the tape if you have tape on fine but take it off after sterilizing, keep the holes open for GE during colonization. GL, CH

My mycelium has grown a strange face. o_o http://i.imgur.com/lLBB2.jpg
Thought this was pretty funny, but I'm confused as to why this patch isn't growing.

Sorry I can't start a new thread. Kind of a noob, don't yell at me. about to start a new batch of cubensis Koh Samui super strain from Thailand Never used this strain before. Was planning on making brown rice flour and vermiculite cakes and then using them to make a casing. (casing of verm and jiffy mix or 50/50) Does this sound like the best idea? There are so many casing mix recipes, what have you guys had the best luck with? I heard about direct casing, but have no experience with it, so I hesitate to waste spores trying it. I also can't find much on this site about direct casing, Probably just looking in the wrong place. I'd appreciate the help!
