no, you can't use that as a casing mix(because it has nutrients), verm alone will do fine, and you usually get rye at a health food store. Please use the search function.

Any health or natural food store should have organic rye berries. I shop in a fairly small town, but it's kind of a "hippie town", so there are at least 4 health and natural food stores. Supermarkets and regular grocery stores just plain won't have them.
A lot of the health and natural food stores are co-ops, so if you join, you'll get a discount, and you can usually order bulk through them with no shipping charges.

Hi guys! I havent been on the forums here in a few years. I have recently decided to get back into the fun sport! I used to be a mad scientist at this hobby! Anyways, I have had lots of experience with the PF Tek method, but I dont recall anything about rye? What are you using rye for?

Rye is used as spawn. It colonizes and you spawn it to manure or coir ect..

Great Post, very helpful indeed. Im working on building my lab now, and getting ready to do this. Ive been reading through this post, and havent seen an answer to something ive been wondering about yet.
I plan on using the standard PF Tek method, and a Shot Gun Terrarium for the fruiting chamber. My question is, what does one do with the perlite that is used in the SGT after all the flushes? Is it reusable? or should I just chuck it?

id reuse it but every couple rounds (like 4 batches) i rinse it out in water. i use a 5% bleach solution first and then rinse like 10 times afterward. i doubt its necessary but overkill isnt a bad thing.

Perlite is definitely reusable, rinsing is good but if you get trich or other contams you can bake it for an hour or so at 350-400f.

You can also start off with Wild bird seed(WBS) until you get ahold of some rye, real cheap and easy to use....!!!

I have this same problem that another guy just asked about: I have placed my cakes in fruiting conditions for almost 3 weeks now and nothing happened so far except for the fluffy mycelium grow. I realize now that I have made some mistakes:
1. I didn't donk and rolled 2. I did not used any light, just natural indirect light 3. I have only had a max of 21 degrees Celsius or 69.8 Fahrenheit 4. I don't have a hydrometer so I don't know the exact humidity but my cakes didn't get dry yet so I guess humidity is ok 5. I have only aered the box twice a day sometimes 3 times a day
I have a transparent container (5 or 6 gallons) with holes all the way around the bottom but slightly above the 2 inch or 5 cm layer of perlite. I also have a few holes in the lid.
I have 4 cakes: one cake from a 6 oz jar, and 3 very small maybe from 0.8 oz jars
What can I do to make it work. Please help.

I'm a total newbie to growing, but about to get started. I've noticed in the PF tek (and many other places) that it's suggested to use 1/2 pint jars, but the pictures often show jars that appear to be even smaller, maybe 8oz jars, and most of the cakes I see look like they came from the smaller jars. Can anyone tell me what's up with this? Does it matter which size jars I use? Do I want the cake to fill up most of the jar (like it looks like in the pictures with the small jars) or do I want some air space, so that a cake in a bigger (1/2 pint) jar actually comes out roughly the size of the 8oz jar?
thanks for your help!

a half pint jar is an 8oz jar
