Because all things tend back to one thing. That's the law of the universe - everything's the same, and so any apart will try to become the same over time.

maybe the universe likes equilibrium because it depends on it to exist

Well, imagine there's One thing, behind all the forms, as stated in Eastern tradition. If there's One thing, then what are all the forms going to do? Would it make more sense if they came together or fell apart?
Look at it from the perspective of Ken Wilber's involution and evolution of Spirit - imagine everything is Spirit and it's trying to realise/get back to itself. Naturally, that would create something like gravity and thermodynamics- rather, that would be a byproduct of the universe trying to become whole again.

imo because the universe itself as a whole is in equilibrium, the things in it seek equilibrium

I didn't know the Universe had likes and dislikes? You learn something everyday. (even if what you learn is incorrect)

The universe would be in a dynamic steady state, not an equilibrium, geeze.
In all seriousness though it is just the balance of nature. Entropy is always increasing, and nature and life are leading the push back.
-------------------- "A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security." Albert Einstein

Well if im wrong about the universe liking equilibrium explain to me why it doesn't because it seems to me that it does, that everything in the universe strives for equilibrium. This is just my objective observation tho, if anyone thinks something different chime in, im curious about what you have to say.

It may do it and I'm not addressing that but to say the Universe "likes" something is a bit anthropomorphic don't you think?

Yes i agree, but from my own observation there are always two sides to everything, and the universe likes to balance them out. Life-Death Bright-Dark ect ect you know what im getting at. The universe seems to have two different extremes of something, and it has them balance each other out.

Your question is unanswerable as stated IMO.

The universe doesn't like equilibrium it would not exist. It 'likes' to be slightly off-center to remain in motion.

To say that the Universe "likes" anything is to anthropomorphize a non-human entity.
Everything tends towards equilibrium automatically; no need to include human desires or motivations in with the mix.

Are you saying the Universe is intelligent?
Can you give a precise definition of intelligence?

I think Intelligence is something an organism can have and wisdom is an anthropogenic quality.
