DIY lid filters

OK, I'm not sure if this is a new idea, I came up with it on my own so I'm posting it as my own. If it isn't feel free to move this thread to hell... anyway just wanted to share this, if even one person finds this useful I'm happy.
Anyway this is an easy and cheap way to make nice and efficient filters for jar lids. Works for both LC and grain jars.
For 1 jar lid you need: - lid - some silicone gel - micropore tape - a 2cc syringe
Start by taking the plunger out from the 2cc syringe. You could possibly use a larger syringe for pint & quart jars, but the 2cc is perfect for 200cc LC jars.

Then cut off the butt end of the syringe. Discard the rest of it.

Then simply add micropore tape to both ends of the piece of syringe. If you want it even more fancy you can put some polyfill inside it first, but just the tape works too.

Make a hole in the lid. You can use a nail, a hole punch, a drill... whatever works. To get a correct sized hole, first make the hole a bit smaller than the syringe then use another syringe of the same size and punch it through the lid. It doesn't matter if the hole is not perfectly round. Then just stick the filter you made through the lid, add some silicone gel in between to make it airtight. Then just make an inoculation port from the silicone gel next to the filter, and let the silicone dry.
Here's a finished lid, without the micropore tape (if you want you can add the tape later, you'll have to change it between uses anyway)

Here is the jar, ready to be filled and pressure cooked.

The advantages to this vs. just covering a hole in the lid with micropore is, that you have two filters, one inside and one outside. If one of the tapes gets wet then the other one will cover for it until it dries.

Nice tek thanks for sharing. I like the idea of the double filters. I'm a little confused one one point, how you get the hole in the lid for the filter. You said "use another syringe of the same size and pucnh it through the lid." I didn;t know you could punch that piece of plastic through metal. Is that even possible?

Oh, I guess I should be more specific... Make a smaller hole first, then stick the syringe through it to get a correct size.
Of course if you have a drill that's the exact same size than a syringe then use it.
Edited it a bit. Actually it's not that important to get the hole exactly like the syringe, because you'll be using silicone gel to make it airtight anyway.
