Moisture in wbs jars
    #9277474 - 11/20/08 09:19 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

So yesterday I was preparing my jars and pcing them.  Pressure cooking was done for an hour and ten minutes at 15 psi.  I waited til the seed was dry to the touch and left no stain on a paper towl.  I then pressure cooked the jars.  This morning I wake up to find that half of the jars have a small ammount of moisture collected in the bottom.

Should I inoculate anyways or start over? g2g transfer in a glove box.

Any other advice on having that moisture go away?  maybe bake them at low heat for a while till it is gone?  I waited for a few hours after boiling and straining so I am at a loss of words as to where this came from.  I know it didnt get in there while pcing I had it covered with foil.

Kind of a long shot, but were your lids dry when you removed the foil?

No, this is my fourth time with wbs which is why I don't get it.  I have followed the same procedure every time.  It isn't a lot of moisture I am talking about somewhere between like half and one and a half cc of water.

I soaked it for 18 hours and simmered for 15 minutes, no exploded grains.  I decided they were moist enough when I could puncture with my thumb nail without really trying to hard.  I couldn't squish it between my fingers at all.

Is it just trash at this point?  I hate throwing things away, but better bird seed than contamed spawn.

Shake the jar and roll it around.  All my wbs jars did the same thing.  After a few shakes and sitting around for a day or two they re-absorbed the excess water and look fine.

Now if you didn't use tinfoil on the lids, it's possible excess water got in during cooking.

Excess water could lead to wetspot. WBS is cheap. I would start over.

Just me.

I used ALUMINUM foil but I don't think that would make a difference at all.  Thats what I have been trying to do so far.  A day or two you say?  Thanks for the tip.

I would hate to have to spend all day cooking again, I have a 7.5 qt pcer and did 17.5 qts.  Don't ask me why, I don't really know.  I think epic was what I was thinking.  I found some thirty gallon sterilites in the back of my appt complex that were empty one day and thought to myself what a interesting opportunity.

you don't clean your grains at all ?all that extra crap can hold in some water. i would suggest rinsing before and after the dunk.

No no no no I do, don't worry I just thought it was a given..  I strain til the water is clear.  I even collect the water in a jar so I can see when it is clear or if it still has a nasty tinge to it.  I even used RO water cause I have a filter at home.

After giving my jars a few shakes the water seems to be distributing and absorbing as needed.  Not there yet but probably within a day it will be ready to inoculate unless anyone can give me a reason not to at this point.

You can try adding a knife tip of gypsum.

It might be that you tightened the lids to much, or did you invert them? it's possible that steam was not releasing from the jar, grains do loose some moisture during the PC cycle, if its only a small pool I think that'd be a good place to start looking.

I prepped a few jars of wbs last night myself, let it soak for 24 hours and this morning I simmered it for about 15 minutes, dumped into colanders and rinsed the hell out of it...

just actually finished putting foil on the lids a few minutes ago....anyways, It doesn't make any sense that water would be pooling in your jars and mine, since more then likely mine was prepared some what wets.  What I'm trying to say is if your's were dry to the touch then steam was more then likely not escaping the jars. Let us know when you find out

I tossed out my first batch of WBS because it looked so wet.  Then I reread the 'dry' tests you can do such as put a spoonfull on a piece of paper towel, if it doesn't leave a wet spot after 15 seconds, it's good to go.

With tinfoil covering the jars, I doubt much steam can escape.  So it makes the jar look wet.  After a day or two it'll look fine.

I didn't mean mine were messed up...I need to stop posting after smoking pot...

If you didn't shake that explains it all, need to redistribute that moisture while they're still hot.

I did shake when they were hot.  Infact I shook them right out of the PC and have a burn to prove it.  I still have no clue where this moisture came from except maybe the seed's moisture permeated the air in the jar when cooking and was taking it's sweet time condensing and reabsorbing for whatever reason.

In retrospect it is just probably some wierd unforseen reasons that are correcting themselves.  I was just a little peeved that my work was looking like shyte this morning.

Thanks everyone for your opinions.

Hmmm thats odd, I should probably just smoke more pot before I post.
