Devon mum asks why nobody was able to help her son [UK]

THE Devon parents of a schizophrenia patient who was found dead after escaping from a psychiatric unit have questioned why no-one was able to save him.
Daniel Heard, 26, who lived in Crediton, escaped from psychiatric unit The Cedars in Exeter in February 2004.
His body was found five days later, near a railway bridge in Hele.
Both Daniel's parents Richard Heard and Lynda Kelly spoke of the "struggle" they have endured since his death, on the first day of his inquest, at County Hall in Exeter.
Mrs Kelly, who has been divorced from Daniel's father since 1991, said: "I continue to struggle to come to terms with this and how so many people were involved with his care and safety yet nobody looked after him or saved him, including me."
She said there had only been two occasions in Daniel's life when she had feared for her son's survival. The first of these was when he contracted meningitis at nine weeks old, and the second when he went missing "when he was psychotic and at large in the freezing cold".
Reading from a statement Mrs Kelly, from Tiverton, told the inquest that Daniel had been diagnosed with schizophrenia during 1997.
She added Daniel blamed his mental health on an experiment with magic mushrooms which had gone badly wrong when he was about 18.
She said: "Daniel told me it blew a hole in his head. It made a hole in his forehead so people could see his thoughts. He thought it was the cause of being ill."
Around six months later Daniel was admitted to The Cedars, run by Devon Partnership Trust, a place "he hated".
Just two before he absconded, he told his mother, when she visited him, that hospital staff were "trying to kill him" and he had to escape to the countryside to sort out his head.
Mrs Kelly expressed her distress that more effort had not been made to find Daniel.
She claimed that despite a positive sighting of her son the day he went missing, police did not send up a search helicopter until two days later.
Coroner for Exeter and Greater Devon, Elizabeth Earland, also invited Home Office pathologist Basil Perdue to the stand.
He said the cause of death could not be ascertained, although among the possibilities were hypothermia, an epileptic fit, and an irregular heartbeat.
The inquest is expected to last for five weeks.

He was diagnosed a year after the mushroom experiment.

Much as everyone here knows and loves psychedelics, this could be anyone. Including you.

psychedelics are a huge cause of schizophrenia in people who are already prone to it. These people don't usually show any sign of it previously. Part of the stigma that drugs make you crazy, because you can never really know who its gonna strike.
