cubensis on pine chips?
    #9270341 - 11/19/08 12:42 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Just wondering how cubensis would do on pine chips vs straw.. my wife bought a rabbit and now we have an abundance of rabbit shit and pine chips and naturally.. the first thing i thought of was... lets grow mushrooms on it!

Cubensis can't decompose the wood. Over the years they have evolved to decompose other things such as straw etc.

You can grow on wood, but the results will be piss poor.

I'm pretty sure pine has anti-fungal properties will won't help your mushies much.  Plus, tell your wife to switch to another bedding, pine (aspen, cedar etc.) will cause respiratory problems in rabbits/small rodents over time.

You could switch to coir and then use it as a bulk substrate afterwards.  I'd imagine you would need to leach it first to get the ammonia out but should be fine after that.

I'm sure if you made the right mix up it would work fine. i would do 50/50coir and verm then add 50/50 pine needles/rabbit poo. add w/e else you want, and fix up the pH . i would be surprised if cubes wouldn't grow. i just used a cedar/coir/poo/cardboard mix everyone said it wouldn't work but it did fine.
edit- he pine needles would have to be dead and dry and the poo would have to be leached.

i was thinking 50% manure.. 30% whatever ratio rabbit shit to pine chips that my rabbit comes up with...  im certainly not going to separate out the rabbit shit but i will leach it.. 10% gypsum and 10% spent coffee grounds

If you are using manure with it, it should be fine. It still won't have as good of results as it normally would, but it should work fairly well. Try it, and post some pictures. :yesnod:
