Re: growing shrooms outside on bales of hay

Ive been thinking about something like this aswell...
I have a fairly big compost in my garden...(closed one)...
So im thinking about braking up a couple of cakes and just mixing them into the compost...
Or make alot of mycelium water and just pour or spray it all over the whole compost..
If im lucky ill have a HUGE cake ...

Comments..??

Do you guys think i could do the same thing with Cop. Cyan. spores..?? (if i can do it at all)

You might want to get a field guide and see what kind of mushrooms are already growing out of that bail. They could be Pan. Subb which grows on rotted hay in the spring time. They have a cinnamon redish tint in the stems and caps that usually have to distinct shades in them. Thats about all I know, I've never personally found them.

About inoculating hay by itself, I don't think it would work(assuming we're talking about Cubensis) It could work if you pasteurized the hay/straw, and then innoculated with a fully colonized cake(crumbled) Theres just not enough nutrient in hay/straw itself for mycelium to grow on.

how about this idea...puting the spores on those compresed hay cubes, and feeding the cubes to some local horses.ive tried puting the spores on the shit on the ground, but didnt get anything.there are however some mushrooms popping up,in the shit that is about 6 inches deep, they seem to grow like crazzy, but they dont blue when picked, some wierd ones with white stems like straws, and a thin cap that turns black and melts when over ripe....damn things stain everything black...

if you take bales of straw make shure there are no molds on it and it has a golden colour...then soak the bale in 160?F water bath....let drain well...and place a cake in the middle of the bale....cover with a sheet of plastic and wait...check for snails/slugs

Try a cold alkaline bath if you can't gather the materials or want to boil hay.

Heh Heh,
Not bad thinking. Along BiO's lines, fresh healthy straw a must. Got a tub big enough for pasturizing a bale? Could work out well, though wondering if oversaturation could occur in middle of bale, due to mass. Though, could also provide a kick ass moisture resevoir! Which will it be?... Temperature would have to be maintained for an extended period to make sure all the gremlins have been exorsized from middle of bail, again due to mass. Would take a bit to get proper temps to interior of large bail. Need long, acurate thermometer to be sure.
You have got a rightious idea here, and if works, could produce well. As always, some personal experimentation will be required here for any results. Do it to it!
Peace

Listen to B.I.O.

If you need a container, you can purchase a used 55 gallon drum for about $15-20. Look in the yellow pages under "containers".

They're a bit bulky but they'll last a life time.

hmmmm....if there are coprinus growing on it (ink caps) then you can spawn them with cubies or pancyan cause the straw is already composting.....check for any worms slugs snails.etc....also you can pour hot water over it to kill the bugs...let drain and plant a few spent cakes in it...should work...

Lillskit, so your'e still around?
Maybe we can change some spores?
In my opinion, hay or straw is a very rewarding material to grow on.
It doesn?t give max-yields, but it?s bloody cheep(sp?).
I(?ve just started growing again after a one year long leave from it.
It?s just to face it, once you?ve grown them you can?t stop.
I just love those little buggers.
Too bad my ultrasonic broke down.
Oh well, i?ll fucking buy a new one.
900 Fucking SKr, but who cares,i need it.

Inkycaps are not active, but they like the same conditions as many of the pcilosybes.

A surprise 3 inches of snow just killed almost all of the existing mushrooms. So here's what I'll try:

Pour near boiled hot water over the entire bale

Crubmle cakes down in between the straw, maybe 3 or 4 inches deep.

Let rain do it's work. Hopefull, little identifiable mushrooms will be popping their caps out of the straw a few weeks later.

Should I try spent cakes or just crumble a new jar? I am hoping that I won't have to pasteurize: im not trying to get the bale to produce ONLY my shrooms. Just so long as my mushrooms will fruit modestly and not be overtaken, this should be fine. Do you think this would work, or would I need to pasteurize the straw bale first to get any results? If steeping is necessary, I'd rather just make a compost pile, and try colonizing that.

Where was that post by fatguy a while back about him sprinkling colonized grain-spawn like seed everywhere around his town, and it worked wonderously? Maybe that could be expanded on.

Peace,
joan

I would use a new jar, as there is very few contaminants in it.
I?m trying the same in a couple of weeks with pleurotus.
I?ve got them on birdseed now.
