P. pulmonarius smells like....?

I just spawned a gallon of sawdust with P.pulmonarius on millet, and noticed the spawn had a strong aniseed smell. Is this normal, or has someone sent me a blazei culture by mistake, as I could persuade myself the smell could be almond essence too...

Since it was me that sent you both the P. pulmonarius AND A.Blazei (and I'm pretty sure I labelled them correctly)...
The pulmanarius has a pretty typical Oyster smell, which I find somehwhat licorice-like. Stamets doesn't specifically mention it as being like anise,as he does with other species, but I sure think it is. So, not to worry! Mine grew quite productively on straw, and also formed more clusters than I had expected.

nah, you only sent me pulmonarius, I don't have blazei.....hopefully;) hmm, seeing as how most confectionary type licquorice (as opposed to pure hard licquorice) is flavoured with anise, I think I'm probably all right then how does pulmonarius compare flavourwise with other oysters? it certainly smells more yummy:)

woops, that was hericium I sent wasn't it? How is that one doing?
The pulmonarius is pretty tasty, but not really much different from other oysters I've tried. They seem pretty thick and meaty compared to some, but that could be environmental.
The nameko you sent me is doing great at this stage. It is quite vigorous on grain, and as soon as my pressure cooker has a free moment (it is canning time here!),I'm going do up some sawdust. Have you grown it out yourself? On what substrate?

>woops, that was hericium I sent wasn?t it? yup
>How is that one doing? sloooooowly. It actually started fruiting off the agar, but since I transferred it to grain the growth is almost invisible.....
>Have you grown it out yourself? On what substrate? yup, on toilet rolls!:D
it?s pretty hard to get it to fruit though, maybe it?ll fruit better off sawdust.

The hericium did the same for me:little teensy lion's manes on agar, nuthin' on grain. I even tried a half-assed liquid innoculant, but w/out a sterilizable blender or Eberbach stirrer it was useless. But I aint giving up...!

I don't see why pulmonarius wouldn't fruit off toilet rolls. If you've got pounds of spawn give it a go:) I just got a block of softwood sawdust for small animals, dumped it in my pc and covered it with boiling water, and left it for half an hour then drianed well. It takes quite a while to drain really well, and I put a dry dishcloth under the strainer to suck up the excess water that remains at the bottom. Then I dumped the sawdust and spawn into a big sterilised bucket and stirred it up to distribute the spawn evenly throughout the sawdust. 2 days later it's looking pretty good, the sawdust is ~25% colonised so far:)
