help with my cat
    #9265061 - 11/18/08 09:30 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

my cat is about 2 years old... Ever since she was a kitten, she always got eye boogies. She cannot clean them so I have to wipe her eyes couple times a day. Lately it's getting worse because after cleaning them, it gets red. Today it looked more sore and looked on the verge of bleeding.

I wanted to see what I could do before going to the vet. Is there something I could use to help her? What would cause this?maybe allergies? Any info would be greatly appreciated

my dogs get red stains under their eyes from the same thing and it is nothing serious.  they have white fur.

cant say i know about your cat for sure though.

Sounds like you're just over-doing it.  Clear the eye boogs once a day at the most, I'd think, and be very gentle in doing so.  I have 2 cats and they both get them, one has allergies sometimes so I understand your plight.

IF that doesn't work try the vet, they probably have some cat eye drops or something.

Definitely allergies. Unfortunately you'll probably have to see a vet to get drops for it.

Edit: also, what kind of cat is it? Persians and Himalayans are very prone to this because of their smushed faces.

Sounds like rhinotracheitis or calcivirus.  Both are super common and most often manifest in chronic conjunctivitis.

The OP didn't mention any excessive itching in his post, so I'm guessing it's not allergies.  In cats, allergies cause severe generalized itching, hotspots and sometimes even hair loss.  Conjuntivitis can be a symptom as well, but itching is generally how feline allergies are diagnosed.

Ahh, I was basing that off of dogs. One of my mom's poodles gets awful eye boogers and brown stains near it's eyes due to allergies. I figured it'd be the same for cats. Now I know otherwise

Actually, all poodles have watery, teary eyes....because they have abnormally shallow eye sockets, thus their eyes bulge out and water a ton.

But that sucks that your Mom's poodle has allergies on TOP of that - what a nightmare!

At least 2 of my cats have either rhinotracheitis or calcivirus, and I'm assuming all 4 of them do since it's pretty contagious.  I forgot to mention to the OP - a great thing that helps a lot is putting powdered l-lysine in their food....you can get it pretty much anywhere.  It helps feline herpes, and will help your cat not have such goopy eyes.  Or, at least, it helped my cats a lot.

Another thing - never use your finger to clean off your cats eyes.  The oils on your skin irritate the hell out of their eyes and can cause harm.  Use a tissue or soft cloth or something.

My parents cat gets this too, though she's about 16 years old now.  She never got it when she was younger.  It's like sleep in the eyes, but sometimes appears a little reddish right?  I don't know what it is, but I've never thought there is much reason to be concerned about it.  Why not just wait until your next vet appointment and ask then, instead of making a special trip?  Do you really think this is an emergency?

This is Lucy. I try not to mess with her eyes too much, but it gets so bad that I have to wipe them once a day. Looks like I gotta take her to the vet. I just wanted to see if there was any way for me to do it before I put down 200 bucks for a bottle of eye drops.

sounds like you are wiping too much, leave the eye boogers alone, the body has natural ways of getting rid of those eventually.

you should probably go to the vet; theyll do a $45 dollar assessment exam, then prescribe your pet some steroid eye drops to prevent infections, or cat pink eye (the worst kind of pink eye  :stoned2: )

If I don't clean it, it just gets worse. When I clean them, I make sure I am as gentle as possible. I agree with not overdoing it though. I don't think its pink eye because shes had this since she was a baby. Maybe allergies though. I don't know if it matters but she gets dark crusty eye boogies

It seems like rinsing the cats eye with a large bottle of saline solution would be more effective than wiping. It would probably be easier on the cat too.
