i wrote this out for a friend that knows nothing of mushrooms and was just over all curious about hows its made. i think i might make it a picture tutorial. if there is anything i missed let me know this is using filter patch bags. Cubensis WILD BIRD SEED (wbs) Pressure cooker ( PC) SPAWN (COLONIZED GRAIN) Inoculation (the introduction of spores to WBS) Glove BOX(GB) Mycelium (myc) SUBSTRATE (WHAT YOUR MIXING THE SPAWN IN TO) Vermiculite (verm) Field capacity (maximum water retention)
Step 1: take out estimated amount of WBS, load into mesh net, in a bucket. Fill water to top of WBS in the bucket,
step2: take out the net, pour out the water. And repeat. Do this until the water surrounding all of the WBS is clear and estimate of about 12-20 times. Once water is clear, place something over the top of he bucket so nothing new can enter. *this is one of the most important steps. And corners cannot be cut. After 24 hours (slight give or take)
Step3: repeat step 2(rinse WBS until clear water is present)
Step4: drill ¼ inch hole in the center of quart jar lid., place filter disc( on top of lid under the rim.
Step 5: load prepared WBS into quart jars. 2/3 – 90% full. Close jar and wrap aluminum foil over the whole top of the jar so that the filter disc doesn’t get wet while in the Pressure cooker
Step6: fill PC with water about1-2 inches to the top of the rack. Place small towel on the floor of the PC so that the jars do not come I contact wit the metal.
Step7: PC for 1 hour AFTER the pressure Gage reads 15 PSI.(don’t cut corners) after pcing, DO NOT open for 12-24 hours.
Inoculating the jars, this task varies a half dozen ways. We might end up using a few of them. STERILE PROCEDURES AND A GLOVE BOX MUST BE USED IN THE STEP.
Step8: wipe down entire GB with rubbing alcohol and new paper towels. Wipe down every quart jar and every singe thing you are using with rubbing alcohol and place in sterile GB the key point to this step is still air; you can’t have any sudden movements in the GB*
Step9a: the most basic way of inoculation is a spore syringe. Inside the glove box flame the needle until red hot place in alcohol soaked paper towel to cool down and puncture the filter disk and squirt only 1cc into the jar. Flame sterilize before puncturing each individual jar.(this is the safest most contamination free way of inoculation but takes the longest to get colonized jars) Step9b: Take a previously colonized jar, wipe down with alcohol and place in GB with other jars. Open grain jar and with a spoon that was sterilized in the PC(1 hour at15) place a small amount into the newly prepared jars. this is called grain to grain transfers.(this is the fastest way to get colonized jars but one of the most likely to get contaminated.) From the beginning of step 9a you should expect to wait 3-14 days to see germination of the spores and then another7-14 days to get 100% colonized jars For step9b you should expect 7-14 days to fully colonize. Note: for both steps the jars won’t be colonizing at the same time. Each jar varies. Jars cannot be used unless they are 100% colonized. When jars are 50% colonized they can be shaken to redistribute the myc. While jars are colonizing they should be kept at 75-80 degree temperature. Above or below will deter aggressive growth.
Step10:preparing a substrate for your colonized jars- take estimated amount of coir soak it in appropriate amount of water to reach field capacity .then mix in about 50% verm, then mix in manure until you see a color change, then add more verm until you feel its 50% verm. Give it a squeeze test to check field capacity. if a small steam come out in the squeeze then there is to much water( if that is the case add more verm or manure) if only a few drips come out then you are okay to go.
Step11: load the entire substrate into a pillowcase, tie at the top and load into big ass pot, most likely the PC. Submerge and place a brick or something heavy on top of that to keep it down, place meat thermometer in the center of the pot.
Step 12: pasteurizing- cook the submerged substrate for 1-2 hours (depending on how much you have) at 170 degrees. A fluctuation from 160-180 will not ruin it but is not recommended.
Step13:let the pillow case drip dry until field capacity(if you squeeze a corner of the pillow case you don’t want to see a small steam of water, only a few drips). You cannot use this until it is cool enough to put on your cheek and it will feel cool. Depending on the size bag it could take 2-8 hours to cool. Hanging it in a brand new garbage bag overnight is fine.
Step 14: sterilizing a small room.(don’t use a room with a carpet).start with a light misting of water to hold down all of the mold spore in the room. give a quick Wipe down of everything inside the room with alcohol that is able to be wiped. Give a quick Lysol spray down.
Step 15: bang all colonized jars in the palm of your hand until spawn is broken up (a bike tire works) take your shoes off where clean socks bring in all of the colonized jars into the room along with the pasteurized substrate in a clean garbage bag. and anything else you are going to need.(tape, filter patch bags, gloves, rubbing alcohol …anything that needs to be in) give them all a nice wipe down with alcohol and this time. Really wipe the room down well with alcohol and bomb the room with Lysol get out and close the door behind you slowly. Wait until you are able to breath in the room
Step16: sterilize your self. Take off any baggie clothes, wash hands and arms. Put back hair.
Step17: the key point to this step is still air; you can’t have any sudden movements making airflow all over the room. Put rubber gloves on and a face mask. Soak arms and hands in rubbing alcohol (do this repeatedly throughout the process after each bag.
Step18: take two handfuls of spawn and place into filter patch bag, open grain jar and pour the whole thing in. if that dose not looks like 3-5 inches add more substrate. Seal bag quickly. Repeat this until all bags are done.
Step19: get out of the room and breath. - Then massage the bags so that the spawn is evenly mixed throughout the substrate. Tape up or paint the bottom of the bag a dark color so that no light touches the colonizing substrate except for on top. This step can take 7-14 days until fully colonized.
Step20: separate any contaminations if or when they occur.
Step 21: pick fruits while the veil is breaking for slightly higher potency and looks. Or let them grow until cap flattens for average potency and max weight.
Step 22 after all fruits from the flush have been picked-submerge the substrate for 12-24 hours, then put back in the same bag ,wait for more fruits., separate any contaminations as they come.
Step 23: place fruits in a laundry basket (something with a lot of ventilation) try and space fruits out as evenly as possible, with racks or something. Put a box fan over laundry basket. Let is stay there as long as it takes to get the fruits cracker dry. (Rotating them can help)
24: store cracker dry fruits in a cool dark location, vacuum seal if possible.
-------------------- Back the tape up. I need it again! Let it roll! Just as high as the fucker can go! And when it comes to that fantastic note where the rabbit bites its own head off, I want you to THROW THAT FUCKING RADIO INTO THE TUB WITH ME! Not me. It would blast you through the wall stone dead in ten seconds and they'd make me explain VVVVV Free Myco Thread
