Big ole shaggy

No shit, I was strolling like I always do and bam, lo and behold there were like 10 of them. These grow all over az. I keep them to use in my yard. So heres the pic of my new foun Coprinus Comatus(spelling may be correct my guides are in the garage,and I'm to lazy to go get now)

Click on the smaller image, I think this featue is new to the board , he was 7 1/2 in, and pretty plum.

Looking at your photo, it doesn't seem shaggy enough for Shaggy Manes. You say you're from Arizona? (this is one mushroom where it's important to know where you're from)

That looks to me more like Podaxis pistillaris, often called the Desert Shaggy Mane. Unlike a regular Shaggy Mane the cap will never open up and the gills will not autodigest. It behaves more like a puffball with a long stem. They are actually genetically related to the Shaggy Manes, but this form is better for a dry environment like Arizona. Note that the photo in the link is an older specimen - when young they resemble Shaggy Manes very closely. David Arora has better photos in his book, even if they are only halftone black & white.

According to Arora, they are edible if eaten when the insides are still white (just like Shaggy Manes).

An excellent find.
