Philadelphia CBP Seize Marijuana, Hashish, Prohibited Agriculture; Urges Travelers to Visit Web Site

Two international travelers arriving to Philadelphia International Airport this week were fined $500 each by Customs and Border Protection officers for possessing illegal narcotics. Additionally, CBP agriculture specialists inspected Italian flights for prohibited chestnuts. Customs and Border Protection officers urge international travelers to visit its Travel website to learn what items are inadmissible before boarding a flight to the United States. ( Travel)

A brown substance that tested positive for Hashish was discovered on Thursday during a baggage inspection of a traveler arriving from the Netherlands, and a smoking pipe and a substance that tested positive for marijuana was discovered on Wednesday during a baggage inspection of a traveler arriving from Jamaica. Both travelers were fined $500 and released; the narcotics were seized and will be destroyed.

"CBP has long had a website that specifically addresses items that travelers are strictly prohibited from bringing into the country and chiefly among prohibited items are illegal narcotics," said Allan Martocci, CBP area port director for the Port of Philadelphia. "Just as travelers conduct extensive research before departing to foreign destinations, we urge travelers to better understand U.S. law and regulations governing prohibited items."

"We encourage all travelers to be mindful of travel regulations," said Martocci.

Though narcotics may carry more severe personal consequences, prohibited agriculture products remain one of the more common inadmissible items. CBP agriculture specialists conducted Operation Chestnut on Thursday that targeted two flights that arrived from Italy after CBP seized as much as 30 pounds of chestnuts from travelers who arrived on these flights during the last week.

Chestnuts may contain Coleoptera (beetle) and Lepidoptera (moth) larva. These non-indigenous yet voracious Lepidoptera caterpillars are extremely harmful to American agriculture.

Operation Chestnut discovered chestnuts on Thursday, but there was no presence of larva. Additionally, CBP agriculture specialists discovered an assortment of other prohibited agriculture products such as pork, Clementine's, apples, pears, persimmons, peppers, oranges, wheat seeds and two plants potted in soil.

As an international traveler, you should be aware of the rules for bringing items back from your trip. CBP has consolidated that information into its Know Before You Go page on the CBP Web site. ( Know Before You Go)

authorities should get off of people's asses when bringing a personal stash on board.  there's no telling where they could get it from on OUR soil.  and IMO they're better off flying with their own.

and just weed & hash.  come on now
