I saw this cool item at lowes.com under air purifiers. its a uv-c sanitizing wand for $60. says it kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria and moldspores. i guess you just wave it over surfaces and it sanitizes them. i'm not suggesting use it to sterilize substrates or casings? but sounds a lot better than spraying oust all the got damn time! i wonder how far and to what extent you could use it in cultivation. anybody use this wand or something similar?

I saw one of those at Macy's yesterday for like 40 bucks. Overpriced in my view. And how do you know it actually works?

Its UV-C. It works. It also gives you cataracts and/or complete blindness if your not careful.
Its just overpriced, build your own proper UV-C rig if your going to do UV-C sterilization.
No, It does not penetrate all the way though. You would still have to pressure cook any opaque substrate.

I don't know about these wands, but I know that UV-C is highly effective in killing shit.

Oh, Please note UV-C is not magical, its LIGHT!!! That is the reason behind its lack of penetration. Its also a huge advantage, all you need is a piece of black construction paper to completely contain it.

i didn't think it would penetrate enough to sterilize spawn or substrate. but maybe for the surfaces you use while working on a project. maybe over the top of your casing if you have to expose the tub to open air for some reason.

It'll work for agar/LCs usually. However, the wand is likely far too weak to sterilize either in any reasonable length of time.
UV also shows real promise in the control of contaminates like trich.

I have one of those. Not sure what model it is (im in the uk). I'll give it a shot on mould the next time it appears on my bedroom wall (damb damp walls)
It kills insects.

Actually, it is that easy, at least for agar. With some legos (Damn useful things ) and a old camera lens that isn't filtered for UV you can focus the rough beam down to a pin point. The lens adds extra control, but a magnifying glass would work too.
However, before turning on the UV lamp, you either have to make sure you have some CERTIFIED UV-C filtering lenses or glass to protect your eyes/skin. Protect other skin with clothing/skimask.
This is where the camera lens comes in, it allows you to not need this and place the lamp at almost any distance so long as the light isn't too difused, where distance affects dot-size with a plain magnifying glass.
I'd write a tek, but I don't want the liability for anybody who screws it up and frys their eyes.
