Anyone ever strain/pull a muscle?

Im having problems with my right shoulder.
It started when i took a 2 day first aid course, i noticed the pain when i went to bed and its increased considerably since.
Its muscle pain, when i lay in bed - if i roll, or sit it up, it hurts.
I have full movement, but certain positions cause shots of pain, and sometimes slight muscle spasms upto my neck.
This happened just over a week ago, and it was healing great - but yesterday lifted some things and chopped kindling and when i laid down was in a world of pain.
Im starting work in 3 weeks, and am aiming for a very heavy labour position. + this fucks things up for me immensely.
Im looking to heal this ASAP - ive been icing 4 to 5x daily and taking ibproferun, while taking it relatively easy..
Help!

i shit you not im wondering about the same thing for my right shoulder as well. although its not as severe as you describe, it only happens when im lifting or pulling something in a certain way, and usually is hard to find that certain position again to reproduce the pain.
im guessing i have a pulled muscle or a slightly damaged ligament, though im not sure. it hasnt really progressed at all, so im not worried until it does.
did your pain start out small and get worse?

anti-inflamitory meds like ibuprofen aren't always good for that sort of thing. The swelling is your body's healing response. some people don't get it, or disagree- but it's true.
Also, those sort of muscle spasms can result from many different things-- one that surprises many people is simple; Dehydration. If you aren't drinking enough pure h20 the body will have cramps (sometimes severe) and spasms or headache. Beer, coffee, tea, softdrinks, juice, and liquor do not count as water- only water counts as water. So drink up! It's on the house!
seriously though, hope you feel better

if its the rhomboid which is really common to injure then do some exercises to warm and stretch it out
takes about 6 weeks to heal and you have to ease up lifting for a few weeks by going light until it heals

Rhomboid Muscle Strain or Spasm Rehabilitation Exercises
You may do all of these exercises right away.
• Reach and pull stretch: Stand and clasp your hands in front of you at chest height. Drop your head down, stretching the back of your neck. Reach forward with your arms, stretching your upper back. Hold this position for 15 to 30 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
• Pectoralis stretch: Stand in a doorway or corner with both arms on the wall slightly above your head. Slowly lean forward until you feel a stretch in the front of your shoulders. Hold 15 to 30 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
• Scapular range of motion: Stand and shrug your shoulders up and hold for 5 seconds. Then squeeze your shoulder blades back and together and hold 5 seconds. Next, pull your shoulder blades downward as if putting them in your back pocket. Relax. Repeat this sequence 10 times.
• Scapular retraction using elastic tubing: Take a 5-foot section of tubing and tie a knot in the center of it. Shut the knot in a door at about shoulder height. Standing about 3 feet away from the door, take one end of the tubing in each hand. Move your hands up to shoulder level, with your elbows, hands, and shoulders at the same height and parallel to the floor. Squeeze your shoulder blades back and together, and pull your elbows straight back, stretching the tubing for resistance. Hold 5 seconds. Return to the starting position and relax. Do 3 sets of 10.
• Door frame stretch: Stand near a door frame. Lift the arm on your injured side straight out in front of you and grasp the door frame. Lean back, letting the pull of your body weight stretch the muscles near your shoulder blade. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds. Repeat 3 times.

Hazey - it sounds like the same problem. How do you think you hurt yourself?
Im a pretty active guy whose abused his body alot, so for me to injure myself doing first aid scenerios is very surprising!
Situations where i experience pain include:
-carrying a heavy backpack -closing a clip on a backpack -lifting my bike -rolling over in bed -taking a deep breath
im just concerned and was hoping to relate to someone around here.
Definatly not dehydrated - water is my drink of choice.
From what ive read, icing and anti-inflamatories are the best way of healing. Immobilization is too much of a hassle, its unfortunate i cant wrap it and use it like an ankle.
Its hard taking it easy, you arms alot day to day..
Unfortunately ive already been signed up to help with construction of earth rammed walls tommorow at a local park development. :S (maybe ill duckout.)

I pull a muscle every night
I've pulled plenty of muscles, just work it, it'll be fine, the more you try and pamper it the longer it'll take to heal and the more you'll be prone to re injuring it, filthee had a good response regarding how to handle it, something that can also help ease the pain is to use a heat pack

yes i've heard that switching off with hot and cold packs promotes blood supply and therefore healing.
Edit - filthee, thanks so much for the info.
Im reading more about rhomboid muscle strain, and it is for sure what i have.
I was wondering too, because the other side hurts in the same place, but not with the same severity.
I wonder what i did. :S

I'm not sure.
If I point my foot straight down (so that the toes are pointing down and the bottom of my foot is parallel with my back relative to if I were standing up straight) then push down on my toes, the calf on that foot tightens and hurts like hell. I have no idea what's really going on, but it's painful.
The first time I ever experienced it, I'd ridden my bike home drunk through the ravine and passed out. I guess I rode too hard or something but when I woke up, my calves in both legs were locked up and felt like steel. I've basically never experienced pain like it.

no worries man the exercises kind of help diagnose it too i kind of had an idea it was that because ive done mine too and read it was the most common shoulder muscle to injure
you usually hurt the rhomboid by pulling heavy especially if lifting something heavy bent over with shoulders instead of straight and with legs
thats how i hurt mine, doing bent over rows
those exercises really help heaps too

I actually strained a muscle in my lower back like a wk and half ago. It was definitely sore for a few days, but the funny thing is I'd already totally forgotten about it - and this just reminded me.

My doctor says the only way to ease muscle pain is to let the muscle rest. Not using the muscle is the only cure.

that's the worst thing to pull--- justs to walk, sit, lay down-- it's right up there with tailbone injuries IMO

Overly streched muscle tissue can be extremly painful when one tries to use the muscle.

Filthee's got the right idea.
My dad did the same thing and just did ice/heat + NSAIDs for a while and it wouldn't help. It'd get better then he'd just reinjure it.
To get it to heal he continued ice/heat and NSAIDs, but also started doing the stretching exercises and avoided any heavy lifting(more than about 15lbs) for about 2-3 weeks. Once he started the exercises and avoided reinjury he was healed in about 5-6 weeks

continue taking it very easy man.
ice and heat. 15min ice, 15min heat.
maybe get some better pain pills than motrin..that shit sucks imo. idk about you though.
the pain is obviously your body telling you to take it easy...i have pulled a few muscles running before and it hurts like hell man. it sucks to just lay around and take it easy when you've got more important things to do, but it is important for your health and future mobility.
good luck man.
know where a good hot tub is? i suggest you use it.

i have done accupuncture. i have two compressed/bulging discs in my neck and i have had a few accupuncture appointments for it.
i have noticed that when i go in while in severe pain the accupuncture is a joke, but if it really hasnt bothered me much that day the accupuncture is VERRRYY relaxing. as soon as i get up and leave it goes away though.
too expensive though. for me it was 50 bucks each time i went. a bottle of vicodin is only like 12 dollars and lasts a hellof a lot longer.
