Using a bottom layer will help retain mosture for the casing which is desirable. It can also help to habor contams if it is too wet. Matter of preference really. Will work both ways. Good luck

I use a bottom layer of wet vermiculite. I'm not sure whether it helps much but it makes sense to me, given that water is so important to the formation of mushrooms. So I would recommend it. Vermiculite can't harbour contams anyway.

Vermiculite can and does get contaminated, I am currently of victim of the dreaded Green Monster!  I used a casing of moist but not soaking verm, then put the rye spawn substrate and capped with 50/50 mix. Everything was looking great, until I put it into fruiting chamber. Overnight I got a case of Cobweb and whenI tried to spoon it out, I saw green mold coming from under the rye. The verm was all green! I did not sterilize the verm, I used it right out of a fresh bag. So it should be sterile but you should not take shortcuts if you want the right results.
