i dont really have the technical know how to pull this idea off, but I want to build a car stereo that will rip cd's and copy mp3's from a mp3 player and store them in a HDD. this is going to be quite the task, but it's gotta happen.

Likely the easiest way is a small builtin computer and LCD screen.
Install Linux with a media center on that computer, or even a small Windows XP install.
Have a USB port...connect your iPod to it and voila.
Shit, there's probably already things like this out there.

Thanks, I just developed this technology based on your post.
Hope you didn't want to copyright it.

I'm pretty sure its out there. Dude if you need help with this it sounds like fun. I bet I could help you make a computer that would easily fit under the seat/glovebox with low power consumption, a good fast (maybe solid state for fast bootup?) harddrive. The only thing is it seems like you'd need some sort of uninterruptible power supply and some program that detects when the power is off (car is off) and starts shutting down safely.
Hmm... *strokes beard*

haha I thought for a minute before I posted this "what if someone steals my idea?" lol but fuck it I doubt I have the skills to pull this off anyways. So if you can build it just remember who gave you the idea and send me one for my car. lol

we could use a lithium laptop battery. that would let it power down safely.

It Exists.... if I remember, I can ask him what it's called.
He had like 100 albums on that shit. The HDD had trouble when it was cold though, so there's something you could work on.
