The only problem with putting the cake directly on the perlite is the possibility of over-saturation. But hey, who the hell am I to say. Just heard it through the grape vine.

As has been said, the paper towels can provide enough humidity (combined with the moisture from the cake) but they are a bitch. Make sure your poorman's is trimmed down as small as possible while still being functional. Less space to humidify.

over saturation isn't a problem as long as the perlite isn't to wet.. lay them on the perlite. strain all the water off the perlite.. you'll be fine..

I got perlite and replaced the towels. This morning one shroom was bigger than it was yesterday! I will put it directly on the perlite if thats whats recommended.

SHIT! i was just checking up on it and it is gathering white fluffy mycelium...I also dropped it! The cake now has perlite on it! It did not fall out of the plastic soda, thank god!, but i was smoking a cigg when it opened...should i be concered with contams now?

The cake looks like it is infested with hyperal knots...but its not. Its just perlite. no more fluffy mycelium

So after the catastrophe with me banging the terrarium around and causing the perlite to cling to the cake....it seems fine. but i cannot tell.
The perlite looks like hypheral knots, but the fluffy mycellium is back. It is growing where the perlite is on the cake.

I don't have a good enough camera to show, but how fluffy can mycellium get? Should/ how I initate pinning?

Thanks

But, seriously folks: How fluffy is too fluffy?
