Poor man's terrarium~because I am.

Using the MMGG:
I used a 2~liter bottle. 2 sheets of slightly damp paper towels on bottom. It is an Alien Substrate cake and I think or thought that it will fall over so I put a lid from a jar underneath it to steady it.

Should it be verm layer down? What do you think?

turn the cake upside down and put damp verm in the lid and put damp verm on top of the cake.

go buy some more, either that or perlite will work. but you need some source of humidity.. without it the cake will dry up and you won't have shit.

But the paper towels are there. Is that not enough? Or should I just plop it down on the towles?

The paper towels should be enough in that size container. I think I read a tek about using 2 liters one time. Spike your water with a little H2O2 though so no mold grows on the wet paper towels.

if you've got condensation then you should be ok for right now.. paper towels suck because for one they dry up quickly, and two they're more prone to contams. if you absolutly can't afford a bag of verm or perlite.. it might work ok, but you'd be better off the other way around.

Make sure you change that towel very frequently, ie every few days

If you can find any tupperware container that you can open you would be better off using that, something that you can mist the sides with.

Or better still perhaps case that with plain vermiculite, casings need far less humidity and you can do it in any container.

I have two rubbermaid containers the size of shoe boxes. but they arent high enough, how high should the container be? I can exchange them for one 12" high instead of 6" high

Lookin good.

Here's what me and a friend did last night
base of a 50 cd spindle, top of a 50 cd spindle (with top cut off) and top to a 100 cd spindle with wet perlite at the bottom.

yeah you can lay the cake directly on it.. just out the perlite in a pasta strainer and run water though it.. or put it in a bowl add a bunch of water then strain it all out.
