I get Kava paste from my local headshop. I like to roll little balls out of it, and put some on a bowl of shisha and relax. I find it kind of acts like a laxative too, however. I always end up having to shit right after I smoke it.

There are people on both sides of the fence. On the one hand tribal people's have used it for hundreds of years, and there has been no shown increased liver damage among them. Of course when taking kava pills the actual kava plant material is consumed, instead of a tea made out of it. There is reason to believe that the chemicals that do liver damage are not actually soluble in water. So when they make a tea they keep out the chem's that do liver damage.

there was evidence of liver damage but that was with extractions using the whole plant. when using only the "root" there is no problem.

As I recall, there's recent been indications of negative liver effects with chronic use, even with the rhizome (not just with whole plant extracts). Probably no worse than alcohol, but still something to be aware of.
I don't recall the references for this off the top of my head, but I'll try to track them down later if I think of it.
Slacker, I wouldn't imagine 2 would do much. I'd go with 10+, kavalactones are fairly weak by weight compared to most drugs.

Well that didn't take long. Journal reference on the effects of kavain (the main kavalactone) on the liver: Fu S, Korkmaz E, Braet F, Ngo Q, Ramzan I. Influence of kavain on hepatic ultrastructure. World J Gastroenterol 2008 January 28; 14(4): 541-546
And a more layman-oriented summary from Science Daily
