Found in lawn in Kentucky- (Pics) Need ID
    #925445 - 10/02/02 03:55 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, I may be a mod on this site... but when it comes to hunting I can really use a little help.  I found these in a yard in Kentucky today while cutting weeds. They dont stain blue. I did find a larger one in the same area last week and it did produce totaly jet black spores. I am taking spore prints of these right now.

I asume there not posinious based on what I have read. But could they be active?

I will try to post better pics later.

Any opinions?
Thanks.

Hmm Im not sure now that this is what I found... here is a pic of the species you mentioned:

I found this info out:

Psathyrella velutina Weeping Widow

Caps are 3-8 cm across, dry, hemispherical to flat, tan to ochre, and covered with dark brown hairs. Gills are attached to free, crowded, white to purple-black, mottled, and often with droplets at edge of gills. Stalks are up to 12 cm tall by 1 cm wide, and fibrous to scaly. Spore prints are purple-brown to blackish. Widespread and common, this mushroom fruits in grass or in open woods. Edible but not recommended.

I found this information here.

The mushrooms that I found are NOT "covered with dark brown hairs"...

Basicly the description dosent exactly fit... not to mention that there is a yellowish tint where the stems were cut in this pic... mine dont have any yellow color to them.

The ones I found do have a hollow stem however.

BTW: The spore prints from these are very dark black in color.

Hey Jammer,

Are there any active mushrooms in the Ohio Valley / KY region?

If your lucky you can find Pans... Cyrans are rumored to be in Kentucky, but I'm started to wonder if we dont simply have a non active look-a-like here. Best to look in the cow pies on farms for anything magical... There a very rare find in Kentucky, and personaly I havent seen them in Ohio.

I would LOVE to find some fresh Pan Cy around here. Pity they seem so rare or perhaps not at all.

Maybe we should become the mid-west Johnny Cyan-Seeds and run around the countryside with seed spreaders throwing colonized grain
