Sterilizing PF Jars
    #9249838 - 11/15/08 03:11 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I sterilized 48 PF jars on the stove.... I waited about 10days to use them and 4 of them have green mold.  Will my water content be thrown off I I re-sterilize the other 44 of them?

Yes, I know. I've used a PC and the Boiling method in the past and had the same results with both, since moving I misplaced the PC that's why I'm doing the boiling method again.

What difference would it have made?

For the OP. As long as your jars were still taped up and covered in foil you don't even need to resterilize them.

I have used pot boiled PF jars over 2 weeks after sterilization with good results. But you need to be sure they haven't lost any water.

They probably did lose a little moisture, depending on RH.. Re-sterilizing doesn't sound like a bad idea, cuz you said 4 jars had trich - it could be growing in others in an early stage.. Plus it may add a little moisture too..

If after ten days he has had growth in some and not it others it is a pretty safe bet that the rest of the jars are clean.

There was a trend at one time for letting your jars (of grain or PF ) sit around for a couple of days after sterilisation to see if anything grew. If it did, you would not have to waste spore solution innoculating jars that were contaminated from the start.
