Is it just me or Terence McKenna was a crackpot? 2

What the hell has that man done or said which is worthy of the attention of intelligent, scientific-minded people who do not excessively buy into pseudo-scientific, high-dose inspired mumbo-jumbo?
Sounds to me like he was a fine guy. I'd have tripped with him. But his theories seem just cracked out to me. It seems that he was stuck in the clouds with Leary. It saddens me to see some people here thinking he's a great intellectual figure when they probably know nothing of Euler or Kant or Feynman.
But then again, I'm a scientist with an interest in psychedelics; not a tripper with an interest in science.

I take it that you are making reference to maybe my happy b-day post I'm sorry if i sadden you. I have always enjoyed listening to his crack pot theories for very many years and most people take it for what its worth just drug induced rants but some people enjoy them. I feel personally saddened to have annoyed some one as intellectual as your self and your scientific precedence.

That was just his experience of the world man... at no point did he claim it to be universal truth.

I enjoy listening to him and I feel his lectures raise some very thought provoking points of view but but some of the other topics he covers are way out in left field.

i like crackpots.
at least they are funny regardless if they are cool or lame.
i really liked the archaic revival and food of the gods. they were just fun to read no matter how i look at it.

Whats your definition of crackpot?
A psychonaut? Yes
A highly intelligent person? Yes
Do some of his theories have holes in them? Yes
Is he necessarily wrong? No
IMO he was pretty much had a fictional Phd as a psychonaut, and especially the mere fact that Psychedelics are so poorly understood and that they are so strange and mystical. Phd means that you are a doctor of philosophy, you know everything to know in that particular field of information that you kinda have guess, or feel a certain way about something (hence the philosophy) for further unknown questions. He certainly was more educated than me and probably you (sorry if im insulting you) but he was How exactly do his theories make him a crack pot, i think that he was right about a lot (not all) of the stuff he talked about in lectures and his books.

Just because he didn't use science (which is a method for investigating the world, important to keep in mind) doesn't make his work garbage, that was his view of the universe, people are aloud to have their own opinions.

How can you say that about someone's subjective experience of this universe?.... especially when the subject of many of his works was metaphysical and intangible to science as we know it?

yeah sorry, people that hate on mckenna are assholes.
he says in pretty much every lecture that he doesn't take any of his ideas as truth, they're products of mental exploration.
I love how if you listen to alot of his lectures with Q and A, Any time someone mentions something from literature he's immediately familiar with the book/writer/poet. He never says i don't know who you're talking about.
i don't know, the magic is in the way he speaks, not so much the ideas, although they're interesting enough. i have no idea how people could put him down.

Maybe his many psychedelic experiances with everything wove his conciousness deep into the matrix that modern humanity had ignored and fought so hard?

Not assholes, but people that are usually very Type A personality that are very "my way is the only way of doing things or explaining things" so when people are not open to possibilities it makes them sheltered. I would say for the most part people that say mckenna is a crackpot just aren't very familiar with different perspectives of evaluating a situation.

Some of his stuff is pretty out there, but thought provoking nonetheless. His views and ideas may have been wrong(not sayin they are) but they do provide different veiwpoints on old topics. I do think he was a crackpot, but atleast he had some fresh and original ideas, thats hard to come by in this day and age. I have great respect for him to have truly broken the mold, he was an interesting guy.
