Nice video, I'll be ready for the big one now!
I think the purpose of a video like this isn't even to reduce injuries from people far away from the blast. Giving people this kind of information helps people feel like they have more control over the situation, and helps prevent panic by giving people this false sense of security. It's like how we were told to go buy duck tape and tape up all the windows in the event of a biological strike. I'm not saying the advice has no merit at all, just like here. But I do think the bigger purpose is because the government feels like they have to tell you something, give the people some way of feeling like they have control over these sort of attacks. So they just tell them whatever sounds like it makes sense, no matter how helpful or worthless the advice actually is in a real emergency. Not to mention there is nothing like a good dose of fear to keep people in line when stripping them of their rights.

Also - 'aiming' is a bit figurative, as all the missiles used by the US are either in silo's or submarines which point directly up :P

Neither country was in any danger whatsoever of nuclear war. The cold war was much more profitable through its lack of bloodshed and the fact that it was dragged out so long. In contrast, bloodshed is needed for the smaller countries, as indicated through the U.S.'s current squabbles, despite the same idea of creating an enemy. It's a non factor that the pawns are getting their intestines blown out. They're just another tool.
