Actually the season is almost over in AUS, but we're having a lot of rain come through at the moment and it looks like it might be promising.

I might be doing a bit of hunting next week after it rains but I'm not overwhelmingly confident.

Is it not cold enough, or is the humidity a good thing?

cold = bad when active hunting in florida. The warmer/wetter it is the better. Should be the same for you, right?

I'd love to have some wood-loving species here in florida. Supposedly there are gyms but they're rare, I haven't seen any.

hmmmm. maybe you are the one .
the one that the legend speak , the one that will discover the psilocybe of the forest of florida, my advise go to all the locations i will provide, natural reserve ,manatii county , ever glades, etc, you need to find habitad as my spilocybe ravines, muddy soil ,etc.
i tell you many have try , but maybe you are the chossen one
since florida is in more direct contact with the caribean this new species of Psilocybe from the Caribbean some day may apear in florida too.: P. caribaea, P. egonii, P. subpsilocybioides, P. zapotecoantillarum and P. zapotecocaribaea.
this is a good read if you like to get into that area of research http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/pdf2003/guzma03a.pdf
this is from the suplement to the monograf of the genus psilocybe Psilocybe mammillata f r om Mexico.- Figs. 40-42. Psilocybe mammillata (Murrill) Smith was known from Bolivia, Jamaica (type locality), the U.S. (Florida) and Mexico (State of Oaxaca) (Guzmán, 1983). It is reported now from the State of Veracruz: Huayacocotla region, La Selva, subtropical (mesophytic) forest at 1800 m of elevation, Jul. 24, 1982, Contreras 3 (XAL). The material studied has spores 6.4-7(-8) x 5- 5.5 x 4-5.5 μm; pleurocystidia are very rare, 12-20(-21.5) x 4-5.6 μm, hyaline, and cheilocystidia are 17-22.5 x 5-5.5 μm.
Cheilocystidia 4-5.5 μm wide. Known from the Caribbean zone, Florida (U.S.), Mexico and Bolivia........................................... P. mammillata
From the U.S.A., Dr. Guzman described Psilocybe stuntzii from Washington (in collaboration with Jonathan Ott); Psilocybe tampanensis from Florida http://www.shroomery.org/9853/Psilocybe-mammillata here is another list
Florida Panaeolus subbalteatus Psilocybe caerulescens Psilocybe cubensis Psilocybe mammilata Psilocybe tampanensis Copelandia cyanescens Copelandia chlorocystis Gymnopilus luteofolius ...and an as yet unnamed Panaeolus species!

well the thing is i always see the copes and cubes and i wonder about the others for me there most a chosen one , mushrooms always pick one out of the box
if you see there is always one in every place . look around the finder of copes , the weilli hunter, mushrooms magnet, some stranger even etc. subbhunter420 . look we are all devoted ...of the same religion but with diferent names..

with copes it's a bit different, though I've gotten it down to 1/2 teaspoon = 1 gram (dried).

I've been told in the Aust 2008 thread that cold+wet is best. Must be talking about different species here. Nevertheless, I was out and saw some inactives yesterday just two days after heavy rain, so I'm back out there looking for actives in another two days.
Should I jump the fence into some paddocks and have a look around? That's the best place to find some dung.

if you're looking for Pan cyans or Psilocybe Cubensis you want warm and wet. If you're looking for wood-loving species, cooler weather is best.

mmmm one teaspoon = 2 grams? Finely pulverised?
Well I am grossly simplifying the dose but there are no scales here to use although I should get some. I'd like to know what a medium sized cube weighs, say 50mm cap with stem.

that is the measure of dried and powdered panaeolus cyanescens. It might be different with cubes.
