geolite and hydroton?

I came across a couple really old posts about an automated FC called the poor mans pod by magash and Ive decided to build one...Anyway it was recommended that geolite or hydroton were used with water filling the bottom 1 in. from the top of the humidity substrate and then placing the cakes on top of that...

Currently I have perlite in a non automated FC..from reading other posts it doesnt appear the perlite will do what I want in the PMP

What type of store would they sell Hydroton or geolite? 

If anyone is interested--  poor mans pod

A guy here recently done that system cause he had some Hydroton spare it was no way near as good as he though and he failed with his grows due to lack of RH so he chucked it all in the bin and we all told him the same thing CLICK ME  \

Since 5 years has past you don't think new and better systems are in place?

Thats the setup I use now...Perlite in a tub with holes drilled in it...Yeah the humidity is fine..but I can tell already that opening the lid 4 times a day to fan is going to get old/risky when the PMP setup only needs to be opened once every two weeks to add water..It seems many have had success with it so I think its worth a try...

Edit: and i have multiple hygros to check once I get it setup..if the RH won't go to 95% then its obviously not worth using..but from the hundreds of posts about the PMP many did succeed without ever fanning/misting..and its like 30-50 bucks for everything

i use one and still fan 4-5 times a day
and i have great results

Yeah it could be a waste of time and money...I'm honestly more concerned about the state of my cakes/blooms..If fanning it 100 times a day manually gave me a super shroom I'd do it..I just think that my arm and eyes aren't a good judge of O2 levels and cake moisture content..

Another concern of mine here is contamination...are they not at much risk  in the FC?? Or is opening the lid 5 times daily not as big of a contam risk as I'm believing it to be?

edit:  It just seems to me that an automated chamber like the PMP Could be a more consistent environment for the cakes rather than just perlite/tub/holes(fluxuating 02 levels.)

The more you fan the better, lack of FAE is one of the major contributors to contaminations.

when i did cakes that's all i used with great results.





the only downfall i had with mine was changing the water every two weeks.  it can be sort of a hassel doing it in your kitchen.  but i came up with a idea for that.  i bought a tub that fir in my sink and drilled a buch of holes in the bottom and dumped the hydroton into it. let all the old water drain out and then ran some clean water into it along with some soap and cleaned the hydroton good and then set it in the 2nd sink and let it drain.

hmmm...are those pvc pipes your air tubes?  In the guide they have them under the hydroton and are not nearly as large... My air wand things arent nearly as heavy duty if they are...

This is going to remain a side project for now I guess...The chamber from the RR lets grow mushrooms video (tub..perlite..holes drilled on all sides) is working well for the time being but I have a lot of time on my hands so I want to check the viability of the PMP

well i wouldn't lie. i usually delete all of my pics after awhile but i have this one left i found.  they always turned out great in that thing.  of course i never left it completly automated.  i still fanned and misted at least 3 times a day.  1x before work, 1x after work and 1x before bed.

no, that's my own little addition.  my air wands are beneath the hydroton as well.  i ran the pvc through there and then cut a piece of coated rabbit fence to lay over the pvc and then the cakes sit on that.  that way they are elevated up off the hydroton giving you the most rh from the surface of the hydroton.

ms man,  this is when i first got into the game. 

they're not for everybody.  but i liked mine.  i think i had such good results with cakes because i kept those little guys damp at the surface.
