There's an off Broadway play called "Nickel and Diming" which attempts to explore how the majority of minimum wage Americans survive in these times. You should see it.
I also recommend an Indy film called "First, Last and Deposit". Actually, the film is better, more accurate, and more insightful than the play.

In reply to:
The Census report drastically underestimates the real scale of poverty in the US, because the official poverty thresholds are absurdly low. A more realistic cut-off point would be close to double the official figures, in the area of $30,000 for a family of four. A more accurate estimate of the US poverty rate is 30 percent.
By your figures 95% of all living humans on the planet live in poverty!

Your mathematics are questionable, especially how you project worldwide tallies based on a U.S. statistic. I'm not sure though whether your exclamation is one of incredulity or shock but it should be the latter as this is fairly accurate. Had you ever been to rural China or the Honduras you would know that far less than 1% of the population controls virtually all the wealth.

No, no, no! The source is not marxist.com, but marxist.org. Those guys are MUCH more credible.
Remember that "com" is short for "commercial", and no real Marxist would be caught dead having anything to do with commercialism. "org" is short for "organization", and if it's one thing Marxists are into, it's organizations.

Actually, the source is the new york times. But, that might as well be marxists.org to you, right?

Have you been following this thread?
I was responding to this ridiculous statement

I was quite concerned about polluting this thread with any FACTS or ACTUAL NUMBERS.
So as to be sure my methodology would be beyond reproach, what I did was drop my pants and pull a number out of my asshole.
This seems to be the generally accepted method of statistical analysis amongst our lefty friends.
As it turns out though, my orificially produced number was quite conservative.
