After reading "Casing For Dummies" a few times and other posts and FAQ's on the subject I feel I can give it a shot with three successfully colonized PF cakes that did not fit in my terrerium. I have one question, though, before I proceed. It regards the sterilization of the vermiculite layers in the casing. "Dummies" seemed skip over the process, and another FAQ was kind of vague with its explaination. To sterilize ( I have no pressure cooker ) I believe I am supposed to microwave a mixture of vermiculite and water- at a 1/2 cup verm. to 1 oz. H2O ratio- in a plastic, covered container for about ten minutes. Also I was told to stir the mixture often. Is this a correct method? Will the mixture be wet enough after cooling to be used, or will more esentially unsterilized water have to be added? How important is heat sterilization of vermic., be it through baking in an oven, microwaving or pressure cooking, if I simply use fresh vermic. out of a newly opened bag? Thank you in advance for any reliable help.

There are two ways to get to the top of an oak tree: start climbing or sit on an acorn.

Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?

>Is this a correct method?

Yes, it can be done this way.
If the vermiculite is too dry afterwards, you can allways spray it with water afterwards once applied.

>How important is heat sterilization of vermic
Some swear on it, some don?t...
It depends on vermiculite and personal preferences.

fresh verm. from a newly opened bag is proly ok to use 'as is'.
that said, i'd still sterilize it just to be sure.

Like Hippie3 said, fresh verm from the bag works well. I've never sterilized it, but then again, I must be "lucky".
Good Luck as always!

I usually wet mine a little more than field capacity and microwave uncovered for 8-10 min. I found that I lose some of the water during sterilization, so when it's done it's right where I want it to be.
