Hey everyone, I am about to do my first wbs tek and from what i read the jars need to be washed before you add the grains and pc them.
My question is, since the jars i have are new, would washing them out with hot water be enough since i cannot fit my hands in them or should i run the through the dishwasher.....or better yet do they even need to be washed at all since they are going to be pc'd....Thanks!

If you want you can put them in the dishwasher. I do it, but it's not going to matter since you are pressure cooking anyway.

hot water is fine. make sure to let it soak for 24 hours. then rinse. then simmer. then rinse again. then drain for at least 30 minutes.
dont use soap.

I've never cleaned a new set of jars. And I run my old jars in the dishwasher twice before reusing them.

cleaning jars is a waste of time. the only thing that needs to be cleaned on them (if they aren't contaminated of course) is the jar rim. PC takes care of the rest.

not very, pressure cookers will kill all.

Cleaning them out gets rid of residue though. PC will kill all contams in the jars, but I still like mine to be fully clean when I start.

No they won't. There are heat resistant endospores that unless you germinate them 15PSI pressure cookers won't kill them. That is why you soak your WBS & other grains for roughly 12 hours.

Sterilisation of grains is never 100%. Youd have to sterilise for 24 hours to guarentee complete sterilisation but your grains would be mush.

Prove it. I have never once soaked a grain and have never had endospore problems.
Quote:
endospores are useful to bacteria, but can cause problems for people. Endospores can survive a temperature of 100 ºC, the boiling point of water. Items must be sterilized or heated under high pressure in either a pressure cooker or an autoclave. Under pressure, water will boil at a higher temperature than its usual 100 ºC, which kills endospores
If endospores weren't killed in an autoclave or PC, we'd all be dead from clostridium botulinum.
