starting pinning?

Ive been reading other tek guides, and some dont mention anything about starting pinning while others do. One i read said that i needed to put the jars at 70F, but the pf-tek on mushroomvideos.com doesnt say anything about that.

Is this a necessary step?

Are you talking about fruiting? Are the jars completely colonized, you dunked, rolled, and placed in the fruiting chamber? I think optimal temperatures is around 70-74 degrees? Also what really triggers pinning is FAE. Light helps but from my understanding FAE is the main cause of pinning.

well the guide i read said that i should start pinning when the cakes are still in the jars.

I don't think you want to start pinning while they are in the jars.

Sounds like you have a bit more research to do.

Which guide are you reading? Link us up and we can tell you for sure. If you are doing PF Tek style you should take the colonized cakes out of the jar (birthing) dunking or soaking them in water 12-24 hours, dry roll in vermiculite, then put them in the fruiting chamber. Make sure the fruiting chamber has 95-99% rH for cakes (right?) and around 72-74 degrees for a temp with a 12/12 lighting cycle. That's it pretty much in a nut shell. I would not grow them in the jar, you are really limiting the growth.

thats what i figured i should do, but i've just been looking around at different teks just to see what they say.

Actually i think someone from this form gave me the like cause i was asking about incubators.

Ah ok I see what they are doing. They are saying let let it start pinning inside of the jar before you birth them or put them into the fruiting chamber. If you use the jar lids with Tyvek or like a Polyfill filter you won't get much FAE. He/She uses tin foil instead of the jar lids which will allow pinning to occur inside of the jar. Hell pre-mature pinning can occur even before the cake is fully colonized. I would first off use the jar lids, secondly wait until the whole cake is completely covered in mycelium then give it an extra 2-3 days after just in case. Then follow the mushroomvideos.com PF Tek video to a T.

i didn't like the way they did things in the other guide(didn't seem very clean) and i am planning on going with mushvideos tek. I just wanted to make sure that was doing everything right on my first grow.

Nah 70 degrees isn't a requirement.  Room temp works perfectly.  If you can wear a t-shirt, but the fruiting temps are under 80, it's good.

Not a problem, yeah mushroomvideos.com is the video I would use for sure. If I were you I would buy their DVD for the future as you may want to do bulk grows as well :smile:
