So I've been playing with this N50 magnet...

It's this one. It's just about the strongest permanent magnet available.
I measured the flux density with a gaussmeter and it measures just over 6000 Gauss at the edges of the ends. It's rated at 14,500 Gauss but that's the internal flux density which drops off quickly as you leave the interior of the magnet. 6000 Gauss is not too shabby though.
When it arrived, I held my keys next to the outside of the box it was shipped in and the bottle opener I use as a key chain still stuck to it. I put a flask containing some magnetite nanoparticles suspended in liquid on top of the magnet to pull them out and the liquid went from opaque brown to completely clear in 5 minutes. Even with the small amount of magnetite in the flask (<1mg), you could still feel the pull of the magnet on it.
We're using this magnet for some experiments at work so we had a machine shop build us a steel box to shield the instruments in the lab from its fields, and so random people laying metal objects nearby don't get injured.
Is there anything I should try with it?

When I was at ANL for the summer, we had a massive non-permanent magnet that was built for some company that we ended up with. (Company went out of business, or something.) Massive, as in 3m tall and 4m long. The first time we turned it on, it ripped the plumbing out of the floor!
We ended up hanging paper clips by string from the ceiling, in a grid pattern, every ten cm or so. When the magnet turned on, we could see the field pattern in the paper clips. We also reproduced the "magneto hydro-drive" from the movie The Hunt for Red October. We had to create a dipole in the water on either side of the magnet, but it actually worked. We managed to get water velocities upwards of 100km/h. Cavitation was another problem, but if I remember correctly, we added some kind of plastic honeycomb in the water channel to get rid of it.

That is fucking cool! I thought that was just some fancy fantasy shit Clancy made up, I didn't know it was possible (though I know there exist magnetic flowmeters).
Was it efficient at all?

Magnets are good fun. I bought a few things from KJ Magnetics also in the past including this little toy.
The largest magnets I bought were only 1" diameter by 1/2" thick discs (N50 black nickel plated). But even those things gave me a few nasty bites! I've seen some pretty gnarly injuries due to magnets like the one you've got there so be careful. Let your guard down for even a second and that thing could pinch off the end of a finger pretty easily.
A really cool trick with strong rare earth magnets is to drop them through a piece of aluminum or copper tube. I have some 1/2" diameter magnets that I like to drop though a piece of 3/4" copper water pipe. The heavier wall the pipe the better the effect. Most people still don't believe it even when they see it with their own eyes, but the magnet slowly 'floats' down through the tube instead of dropping straight through. I haven't taken a video of it yet, but heres one to show the effect.
But I'm afraid you might have a hard time finding a piece of copper big enough to drop that monster through!

I've done that before, it was right up there with the angular momentum demonstration in Physics I or II. I still pause and think about the latter every time I pick up my external hard drive when it's spun up.

I wonder what the energy return on that would be....If you were to use a permanent magnet large enough to create the same effects and use a non magnetic turbine to produce electricity....hmmm

I really know nothing about magnetism. What is a permanent magnet? One that is not powered by electricity?

Sorry I quoted the wrong thing.
Basically if you can get water flowing without using any energy and then connect a non magnetic turbine to a generator far enough away from the magnet to not be affected by the magnet then you could produce energy. If that makes sense.
It probably doesn't though, or it would have already been thought of.

> Also, I could imagine the box sticking to the floor of the delivery truck if it weren't padded on all sides a lot.
When I ordered a strong magnet it came in a very large crate that prevented these sorts of problems. Had to be shipped as a hazardous material and cost a small fortune in shipping.

This one wasn't quite shipped as a hazardous material, but air shipping wasn't available. The magnet was suspended in the middle of the box and the box was big enough that most of the field died off by the outer boundaries of the box but there was still enough residual field to attract small, lightweight objects. I doubt it was still powerful enough at this range to erase magnetic media but it was still obviously powerful enough to potentially interfere with an aircraft's navigation system if onboard...
I measured the outside of the box with a gaussmeter I just can't remember the reading. I think it was only three hundred Gauss or so. The field at the strongest point on the magnet's surface was something like 6000 Gauss
