 I Have a Tech Question About WiFi

My neighbor gave me his wireless info so I could use his wifi connection. In the summer I keep his lawn in good shape and this winter I will shovel his path for him. It's a lot cheaper than paying for cable internet!
If I'm in the rite spot I get download speeds around 500kB/s but that sweet spot is on my bed and when the old lady is in bed or I'm going to bed the downloads really suffer. It would be nice if I had a a device of some kind to put in the sweet spot that was small that rebroadcast the signal so my whole place would get a good signal. I had a buddy that's pretty good in photoshop make up a diagram to help me explain a little better what I'm talking about.
The mystery device is basically acting like a cable modem would in a standard setup, connecting to my router via Ethernet cable then my router will fill my whole area with a wifi signal
Do they make devices that do this?

You can get a USB wireless device, and have it setup in your "sweet spot"...Then get a USB extension, and run it wherever you want in your home...That's the cheapest way I would imagine.
Also, if that doesn't appeal look up signal amplifiers...Or the better bet is a WiFi repeater.

I want my laptop to be wireless so USB is not going to cut it. I already have a wireless router, If I could just get the signal into the the router i would be home free.

I've never heard of a wi-fi repeater, but they should exist.
This page seems to indicate it cannot be done just with a wifi router.

I'm aware it can't be done with a router. Hence the "Mystery Device"

Oh, righto, well your mystery device would be a wifi repeater. But as I said, I've never seen one, so they probably aren't very common (and are therefore expensive). There's very little you can do without spending a heap of money.
Unless you have a spare computer? Place it where there's a good signal and use the computer as a repeater.

Wow it has some pretty bad reviews on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833995002
I can’t believe there aren’t millions of things like this on the market in this price range, with wifi being as wide spread as it is these days. What’s the deal? Is something like this expensive or complicated to make? I’m so confused!
It might be less of a hassle to get an old computer and a wireless card or two if you need two and make my own like zouden suggested. Any one know of some really good tutorials dealing with this?

Oh that's good! Then just find the cheapest router that supports DD-WRT. Or maybe your current router already does?

I just felt like adding this...Be sure to not use WEP, or WPA encryption. WEP can be broken in minutes, and the last 16 digits of the encryption of WPA can be decrypted now...This means for someone who has the time to sit there for a day on the PC can get past it.
Just a thought.

Edit: wait, isn't the WPA attack against TKIP? I think the standard PSK version is still secure.

Well, you said it...WPA has several variants. I'm not sure which ones are secure or not against this attack. The details are still unclear at the time. There is WPA2 now...Bottom line is don't use WEP, and don't make the WPA key like your last name or some BS like that.

If that is your router pictured there (linksys wrt54g) or any higher version, it will support DD-WRT open firmware. AS others have said, it enables it to work as a repeater, which is just awesome. I had a la fon router with dd-wrt on it at my last house, and set it up in the garage as a repeater, since my modem/router was in the very corner of the house, this gave me full signal on my entire property, about 1.5 acres, for very cheap.
