some monotub questions....

ok heres the scoop my buddie gave me.... A day and a half ago he set up a monotub. He used 5 1 pint jars of popcorn to a 10lb bag of high mountain compost. The tubs sub level came out to 4 inches he has holes drilled near the top and near the sub level all stuffed with poly-fil. The lid has a cut out on top with clear plastic so you can see in. He then put the whole container in a black garbage bag ao his questions are
1...do you completly seal the garbage as to not allow air exchange for now?
2...what should the high mountain compost smell like after being mixed in with spawn after a day and a half
3....and aprox. how long should full colonization take when using...hawaians on popcorn ( 5 1 pint jars), and 4 inches of high mountain compost substrate?
4....should you see "water on the walls"/ condensation in the tub on the walls?
being the first bulk grow hes ever tried he's a little nervous. And there anything you can suggest that he change PLEASE let him know!thanks

1...do you completly seal the garbage as to not allow air exchange for now? ---------------------------------------------------- It doesn't have to be completely sealed. Just take the open end of it and drape it under the tub.
---------------------------------------------
2...what should the high mountain compost smell like after being mixed in with spawn after a day and a half --------------------------------------
Sry i dunno what's in it
---------------------------------
3....and aprox. how long should full colonization take when using...hawaians on popcorn ( 5 1 pint jars), and 4 inches of high mountain compost substrate? -------------------------------- It all depends on the ratio of spawn:bulk. With popcorn as spawn it will add a few days because of the kernel size and it mixes poorly compaired to rye. ------------------------------
4....should you see "water on the walls"/ condensation in the tub on the walls? -----------------------
There's a good chance you will. It isn't bad or anything.

For spawning swich from popcorn to rye. Popcorn still works but takes longer.

well the ratio was 2.5 quarts of popcorn to 10 lbs of compost..(5 to 6 quarts). I still wonder about what the smell coming from it should be like...

that's a pretty strong ratio... 1:2ish i'm not sure how long it'll take to colonize though. figure no more than two weeks

Try not to give it any FAE for a week or so until it is fully colonized. Then take it in a room with a decent source of natural light. Try and have this room at 70-75 degrees farenheit. Also try and have a ceiling fan run on medium 24 hours a day to get good FAE in your tubs. I used to open my tubs once when they were done colonizing in an attempt at giving them their adequate supply of air but upon experimentation with consistent monoculture isolates, I have concluded that it is better to truly never open them at all until harvest just like the tek says. Also I would recommend not using a casing layer in monotubs.
And condensation on the sides is definitely normal.

I have never used one but I have had slight problems doing 4 inch subs uncased in monotubs. The top gets kinda dry looking and that might be why wax paper is recommended. I only use about a 1-1.5 inch sub layer in my monotubs. I still get 3 oz. dry first flush consistently.

The ratio will be ok. EVERYTHING THAT Stimpy913 said is "right on". As far as the smell is concerned, the best way that I can convey that smell is...... Get a white button mushroom from the grocery store, start chomping down eating that baby and while you are eating it, breath in and out through you nose! That smell is the the same smell you should be getting when you open up the garbage bag. Oh, and by the way. Keep your monotub sealed for at least a week before you go messing and poking around in there. The garbage bag should just be slightly folded over and draped over the substrate. When you open it up and take a peek you should be greeted by the wonderful smell of fresh mushrooms and expect the pools of condensation on top of the fully colonized substrate. That's ok!

It is a clone isolate of the Amazon strain. Do sectoring out on agar of any strain spores/flesh and you can get just as good and even better results over time.
Also you could have made 2 good sized tubs with the amount of substrate you used. Try making 2 smaller tubs next time and see if you get an increased yield from the 2 tubs. Unless your in a limited space type situation and you only have room for one tub or something.
Of course this is only my opinion. Many people will tell you the bigger subs are better. It's really just a matter of preference.

well his original plan was to split the 10lb bag in half and use 5 pints on one batch and 5 pints on another. But then he realized that the ratio would be off. so he went and used the whole bag on this one and ordered another.

You could have used 2 or 3 on one and 2 or 3 on the other to achieve the same ratio.

make sure you have some of your grain mixed in to the top layer this will help colonization time
