My Rye Bag !
    #9221227 - 11/10/08 10:19 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

My Rye bag that has been sitting in the dark for 2-3 weeks is bearly showing signs of White Mycelium. I can see about 3-5 lil white bunch up seed stuck together. the bag has an air patch and a lil condensation
is in the bag. the Temp is kept around 76-82. I was wondering if there is anything to help the Mycelium in the Rye bag. plz leave a comment or reply, Thnx you !:jointsmile::mushroom2:

are you incubating the rye bag? That can help contaminants especially with bags. Often the metabolic activity of the mycelium can cause a heat increase in the substrate. In jars this usualy is equivalent to 5 degree F increase. In a bag this can be much more. So you should stop incubating.

its able to get air. its not in a sealed closet. my room is dark and the temp is 76-80 F degrees. i have a Celling fan circulating the air and a Humidfire on that puts out lots of humidity and keeps my room humid 30-40 percent. its this ok...?

so do you live in a sauna or something? That colonization temp is probibly what's slowing the bag down.

Edit: You could break up the contents and mix the myc up so that colonization occurs faster.

humidity is relatively sealed in the bag, your filter patch most only lets air through. So the humidifier is totally unnecessary to my knowledge. However at that low of a humidity I'd go for a second opinion. Where I live the minimum humidity is 55-60%. If your running a humidifier to get 30-40% your probibly rocking a 0-20% regular humidity level. This puts you in a real arid area and I can't vouch for the behavior of filters and patches in that sort of environment.

Have you been touching the bag, mixing the substrate? I've heard this alot, and it's terrible to do at first.  Also, where the spores from?

I pick the bag up to take a look at it every once in a while. I shaken the bag 2 times now. once to introduce the spores. The second time, was to see if mycelium was growing within the Rye seed in the bag cuz i saw a lil bit of white growing and thought it might be growing form the inside out to the surface. the spores are Combodian strain.

I'd advise against shaking it.. It's OK before inoc, but if you do it afterwards, before you have any decent growth, you're just gonna destroy the mycelium network.. Where did you order the spores from?

I got a Q-tip swab off a spore print and into a Rye bag. The bag was then shaken to spread spores all around. The bag has a patch filter for air cirulation. and thats about it. Dry spores. can this cause a delay. -=Joker*=-

This seems like a bad idea, but I guess it could possibly still work.. I don't understand how you got the spores into the bag.. Is this a bag you made personally? Or did you cut a vendor bag? That's a total breach of sterility, whatever you did..

the bag is sterlized and the Q-tip was introduce after the bag was cooled down. I had to shake the bag to spread the spores around in the bag, now all I do is wait and see. those were the steps

So if you had access to the inside of the bag, it's not sealed, correct?  But you say it's a filter patch bag.. Did you make it yourself?

it is sealed at the top. The bag i got had the patch already. all i did was open the top and drop the swab in and sealed it back up. i did this step in a clean glove box enviroment!
