Who Hunts?
    #9220431 - 11/10/08 08:03 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone going hunting this weekend for opening day?  I will be up in Northern Michigan on my Grandpa's 5 acres.  I'm really excited, I've never gotten a deer before, and I'm hoping this is the year....wish me luck

hunting is neat

is it me, or does it seem like using a gun would be a more humane way to hunt?

Nope, mainly because it's for phychos.
I live in Michigan, everyone hunts, even the people that deserve to starve according to Darwin.

I wouldn't say so.  Arrows can easily pass through a deer, assuming you're not using a pussy bow.  And with a broadhead the wound would be much wider, there would be much more severing of internal tissues than a bullet.

Yeah 5 acres isnt a lot, but there's deer on it, plus there is State land all around.  Seem's like a few people on here hunt, I love this time of year!!

Pris you're lucky!!

It still amazes me how easy it is to shoot deer in the USA, you would NEVER see deer on a 5 acre block in my country - and i know that its not uncommon to see them on 1/4acre town blocks over there.

First deer i shot i walked in 20km ~14miles into dense, shitty, steep jungle to shoot it and walked 20km with its carcass sacked over my shoulders and back-pack all the way back out.

The next 2 deer i shot were when i was drunk, in a car on a public road and completely unprepared - one with a .22lr the other with a .45 lol. But thats pretty rare here apparently..

you shot a deer with a .22?  please tell me you retrieved it

i would say so, using an arrow usually means waiting for the animal to bleed out but a bullet can knock that mofo straight down! hahah

Its all about shot placement..Most bow hunters train for months even years. So they know where to hit for a fast kill...

oh yeah they're fearless, fast and mean as hell.  I was chased by one when I was 9 or so.  I was walking the woods and had a 4/10 w/ bird shot and ran into one.  didn't do squat but piss it off.. I was hopping' cow gates like an Olympic hurdler.

A 410 is barely enough to drop a bird

I can't imagine it would do much to a hog.

How long, on average, would you say it takes the animal to die if you are hunting with a bow?

This is assuming that the hunter is your "average" bow hunter.

I wait thirty minutes after the shot to go looking, regardless of whether it was a gun shot or a bow shot.

Ya.  I dropped a deer once, and I'm pretty sure it died instantly.  The bullet ripped through the spine.  I still waited 30 minutes, but I'm pretty sure it was dead.

Otherwise if you hit em in the heart they go down pretty quick.
